Whether you call it prescient omniscience or just dumb luck, The Onion's latest lampoon seems to have correctly predicted the Y!phone (pictured above). Or at least something close. We just received our invite to a Yahoo press event on Monday where CEO Carol Bartz will try to wow us with the following: "An exciting announcement about providing global consumers with rich online and mobile experiences, and bringing forward a new era in keeping consumers connected." http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/21/nokia-and-yahoo-announcing-partnership-monday/

http://mashable.com/2010/05/13/browser-html5-css3-ready/ Lately, in part due to Apple’s rejection of Flash on its mobile devices, we’re hearing a lot about HTML5 and CSS3. These new web standards promise video and audio support and many graphical improvements in webpage rendering, as well as certain technical tidbits, such as drag-and-drop support, which will make our web-browsing experience more enjoyable. It’s all fine and dandy, but how many CSS3 and HTML5 features are supported in today’s web browser?

About New York - Creating a Network Like Facebook, Only Private - NYTimes.com

David Goldman for The New York Times Ilya Zhitomirskiy, 20, far left; Dan Grippi, 21; Max Salzberg, 22; and Raphael Sofaer, 19, all students at N.Y.U., are trying to reinvent social networking online. A few months back, four geeky college students, living on pizza in a computer lab downtown on Mercer Street, decided to build a social network that wouldn’t force people to surrender their privacy to a big business. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/12/nyregion/12about.html

Android operating system gaining

Eric Risberg / AP The Droid Incredible by HTC is the latest device to use the Google smart phone platform. The Android operating system gained market share in the first quarter. The Android operating system moved into second place in sales for the first quarter, outpacing the iPhone OS for the first time while still falling short of the BlackBerry platform, according to the NPD Group. According to NPD, Google's Android took a 28 percent share of the U.S. smart phone market during the first quarter, behind Research In Motion's 36 percent and ahead of iPhone OS at 21 percent. The numbers are derived from monthly consumer surveys but don't include corporate smart phone sales.

I was initially very critical when I first saw Microsoft introduce the KIN ONE and TWO because I believe it is after a rapidly-shrinking demographic (also, what's with all the capitalized letters?). But, after playing with the KIN ONE for about a week, I want to give Microsoft credit for delivering the best cloud-centric device there is on the market right now. Read our full review of the devices for a more thorough take of the positives and negatives, as I still think these are ill-fitting handsets in a rapidly evolving world. Despite all the flaws, what I dig about the KIN phones is that Microsoft understands that the future of computing is going to be mobile devices that are just terminals for "the cloud". As for the user interface, the KIN phones make some fascinating choices about interaction metaphors and how you should look at a phone. It's an incredibly visually-oriented operating system that emphasizes swipes and big, bold pictures.
