This post is part of Tutorial Tuesday, a series hosted by “The Admission Insider” and PortPrep owner Karen Kesteloot. Tutorial Tuesday aims to help students improve the artworks in their college art portfolio by teaching various hand drawing techniques. Creating a well-composed charcoal drawing is a skill that you as an artist must learn how to do. It’s not simply about letting the charcoal run down your paper to draw figures and the background – the thickness of the charcoal lends to textures lines with lots of volume that can be manipulated to your advantage.

Sheridan College held its annual Arts Open House this past April 26, 2014. “The Admission Insider” and PortPrep owner Karen Kesteloot attended the event and had a good time in the process. In the video below, Bryce Jones is drawing a caricature of Karen. Bryce is currently taking up the Animation program at Sheridan. Karen also caught up with one of her former students Puneet Jagwani. After learning from Karen how to make a winning art portfolio, Puneet was able to submit a portfolio at Sheridan College that got him into the Animation Program! Currently in his second year as an animation student, Puneet chats with Karen in the video below as he discusses the importance of storyboarding and creating a layout for his animated work. Karen Brushes Off for a Good Cause

Through her instruction, she has gotten high school students get into their art and design programs of choice in college by helping them build a winning art portfolio. On February 8 of this year, however, Karen lent her artistic talents that tested her ingenuity and creativity for a good cause. PortPrep owner Karen Kesteloot participating in the Brush Off Event last February 8, 2014. The Brush Off Event pits 24 artists in the Guelph, ON area to a grueling four-round competition that encourages the artists to use different materials to create the artwork, with each round lasting for 30 minutes. In the video below, watch Karen as she uses a spatula, chopstick, and other unusual materials to create her compelling artwork.

How to Draw with Conte

Tutorial Tuesday aims to help students improve the artworks in their college art portfolio by teaching various hand drawing techniques. Conte are drawing materials originally from France and are made from kaolin clay, natural pigments, and graphite. Conte crayons produce rich opacity and vivid colors, especially when used on bristol, grained surfaces, and newsprint.

Unlike oil pastels, conte crayons are less waxy, do not leave dust on canvas after use, and contain more pigments in a stick.
