5 Ways CEOs Can Be Interesting on Twitter [SlideShare] Get ready for this stat, marketers, because it's going to blow you out of the water: Only 18% of Fortune 500 CEOs are on Twitter. Put another way -- 82% of Fortune 500 CEOs are missing out on the opportunity to lend an authentic voice to their brand, share product news, and hear from customers. That's an insanely low percentage of CEOs taking advantage of an awesome opportunity -- especially when you know that 90% of these same CEOs believe social media is most important in enhancing company reputation and brand awareness. At the same time, we can also sympathize a bit with these CEOs.

Knowing how to use social media properly takes time -- but once these CEOs are up to speed, they can reap the benefits. According to a Weber Shandwick survey , CEOs who use social media are viewed as better communicators, more open and accessible, and more inspirational than CEOs who don't. 1) Avoid the stodgy stereotype. 2) Stand for something other than money. 3) Make yourself the company mascot.

Ready? It’s falling into the trap in thinking that there’s something new about social media.

News flash: there’s nothing new about social media . OK, OK—maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, because tools like Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Vine and LinkedIn didn’t exist a few years ago. Yet look past the tools and, at its core, social media is a publishing platform —plain and simple. 10 Social Sites You're (Probably) Not Using But Should Be. The Web is full of social destinations where people come together to answer questions, discuss news and share interesting information with each other. In fact, aside from the ’Net’s most popular social sites, like Facebook , Twitter , Google+ , LinkedIn and Pinterest , there are myriad smaller, alternative networks where people participate in conversations every day.

Most businesses are missing these conversations (a.k.a. engagement opportunities), because they focus their resources on the larger, aforementioned social networks. And while it is important to maintain an active presence on popular sites like Facebook and Twitter, reaching out to audiences on smaller social networks can help a brand foster new relationships, generate traffic, and build authority and recognition within its niche. Only 37% of Marketers Think Their Facebook Advertising is Effective [Study] Social Media Examiner has released the 2013 Social Media Marketing Industry Report. Of all the questions they posed to marketers this year, the thing that stands out the most is not how many businesses are using social media, but how many aren't actually tracking how effective their social media marketing actually is. Of those who participated in the survey, 97 percent said they were using social media for their businesses and 86 percent considered it to be an important part of their marketing efforts.

Moving onto Facebook specifically, it isn't surprising that 92 percent were using Facebook as part of their social media efforts and that 49 percent considered Facebook to be their most important social media platform. But what is surprising is the fact that only 37 percent of marketers think their Facebook advertising is effective. That is a pretty astonishing number.

You can download the entire report here (only available for free until May 30). Social Media Engagement and Impressions. For some time, the inclusion of the word ‘media’ in ‘social media’ has sort of rubbed me the wrong way. It’s that word ‘media’ that I find causes some people to lose sight of how social media can most effectively be used and how it should be measured, and instead they start trying to compare ‘media’ and ‘social media’ on common ground. They try to calculate the ROI of their business’ social media efforts based on the number of impressions they can achieve with their brand’s content, which is a very ‘media’ way of measuring success. When they go on to correlate social media impressions to what can be accomplished with paid media they quickly come to realize that comparatively, they’re not getting many impressions via social media, and those that they do get are extremely inefficient. Surprise, surprise! The fastest, easiest, most obvious way to do this is to acquire more fans, followers or subscribers.

It’s not as crazy as it seems. 50,000 low quality fans or followers Done. Since Google's announcement of enhanced campaigns , all eyes have been on mobile. Advertisers who have felt the pain of lower ROI are left wondering, "Are enhanced campaigns going to help me win in Google mobile – or are they designed to help Google win in mobile? " Let's start by acknowledging that yes, mobile is growing like crazy.

People are using these devices at an accelerating pace, and eMarketer has forecasted mobile advertising to be almost an $11 billion business by 2016, up from 315 percent from 2012. Interestingly, a recent study by IAB reports that "mobile" doesn't mean "remote," as mobile activity happens most often in the home. But the IAB findings explain that the period of highest usage of mobile devices occurs during leisure activities at night, rather than during the "on the go" errand-running times of the day.
