Apple celebrates 'A Decade of iTunes' with year-by-year milestones. By Sam Oliver Apple on Wednesday rolled out a new feature on its iTunes Store to celebrate "A Decade of iTunes," offering customers a history lesson of the company's now-dominant digital download destination. The new addition to the iTunes Store includes an interactive timeline that allows visitors to see how iTunes — as well as popular music — has evolved over the last ten years. The feature kicks off by recalling April 28, 2003, when the iTunes Music Store launched with 200,000 songs, and the third-generation iPod was unveiled. Back on its launch day, the top-selling song on iTunes was "Stuck in a Moment" by U2, while the most popular album was "Sea Change" by Beck.
More than a million songs, priced at 99 cents apiece, were downloaded in the first week. By clicking through on a year-by-year basis, customers can view the top selling iTunes album for each, and also view numerous individual milestones. This Sunday will mark 10 years to the date that the iTunes Store opened. The future of music, according to Spotify's Daniel Ek | Internet & Media. AUSTIN, Texas--Daniel Ek was waving his arms in the air, as if molding invisible clay. He swiped his right hand karate-chop style, made a big loop, and then grabbed an imaginary dial with his left and twisted his fist. Ek, you see, was talking about the future. In this not-so-far-off future, maybe a decade from now, we're all connected, everywhere, all the time -- perhaps via Google Glass , perhaps via sensors built into our clothes, or through other wearable computing devices.
Our touch-screen life will require no touching whatsoever, as we control what we're listening to or seeing through hand motions or simply by talking. And we'll experience it all in 3D. "Actually, I don't want the string section," said Ek, grabbing the invisible song with his left hand. "I'll just kill that. " Ek's role in this all this? I met with Ek, who is 30, at last month's SXSW festival in Austin, where Spotify rented a small house on the east side of town and painted it Spotify green. Well, not quite. Spotify Is Paying Something Like $400,000 per Day to Advertise on YouTube - Rebecca Greenfield.
Spotify is giving ones of its competitors $400,000 per day to advertise on its homepage. At least that's the going rate for a "homepage takeover" on YouTube—one of the Internet's most popular music destinations which is reportedly working on a streaming music service of its own. Spotify is paying to run a clever Phoenix ad that began this morning and will unfurl in 18 parts throughout the day.
The $400,000 estimate comes from a February Digiday survey of what advertisers are paying for various high-profile spots on the web including YouTube's front page. It's a lot of money for an elaborate viral video campaign and it's right on the front page of YouTube this morning. This is just the latest in a series of aggressive ad pushes for Spotify, which ponied up a reported $10 million for television ads last month. Justin Timberlake's Promotional Run-Up to 'The 20/20 Experience': A Timeline. They say hindsight is 20/20, but when it comes to Justin Timberlake's comeback, they're not taking any chances. Next week's release of Timberlake's beyond-highly-anticipated new album The 20/20 Experience is riding on one of the most effective global marketing/promotion campaigns in pop-culture history.
In the years since he put out his last album, 2006's FutureSex/LoveSounds, JT and co. had been subtly stoking intrigue about if and when the all-around entertainer would make his return to music, with Timberlake even going so far as to sing a song called "Not Gonna Sing Tonight" on "Saturday Night Live" in 2011. In January, however, that campaign burst out of its cage via a series of carefully orchestrated, carefully selected events designed to whip up excitement on a major scale.
"While it feels like he is everywhere, he has been going with less-is-more," said RCA Records president/COO Tom Corson. "The looks he has been getting have either been large events or strategic. 4 Emerging Trends in Social Media & How They’ll Impact The Music Industry. With a rise in social TV, multi-channel engagement, and recent reports suggesting that there are more mobile phones than people in 4/6 of the World’s regions, this year will no doubt be an interesting one for social media, but how will these trends impact the music industry? 1. The Internet of Things (IoT) One of the most interesting emerging trends in social media (IMO) is what’s being termed as ‘The Internet of Things’, referring to the connection between physical products and the Internet.
My first (memorable) experience with IoT was at a festival two years ago, where on entry I was given a wristband that was authenticated with my Facebook account. If I scanned my wristband on various ‘pillars’ at the festival, it would automatically post which artist I was listening to at the event on my timeline. No, it wasn’t a Disney festival. I just couldn’t find a better picture! While a little intrusive for my liking, this was very forward thinking for an event held in 2011. 2. 3. 4. Spotify’s social network arrives: New Follow tab is now gradually rolling out to users. After teasing a heavy dose of discovery and social features, Spotify is gradually rolling out its ‘Follow’ tab to users on the desktop. We first revealed these upcoming features back in December, and now Spotify has informed us that its follow tab is already available to some, and will roll out in stages. For now, there’s still no sign of the discover tab — the other half of the company’s big announcement back in December. As we’ve previously detailed, Spotify’s People tab will be replaced by the new Follow tab, which features basic profile details and recommendations.
As far as Facebook is concerned, Spotify’s integration had previously been limited to the right sidebar, but now it’s easier than ever to connect with Facebook friends and follow them separately on Spotify. “Separately” is key — Spotify doesn’t seem to plan on riding Facebook’s coattails forever. Back to the news, here’s what users will now start seeing (via our earlier look): The New Profiles.
Shazam hits 300 million global users, celebrates with an overhaul of its iPad and Android tablet apps. Media engagement service Shazam today announced that it has surpassed 300 million users worldwide. In addition, the company says that it will be releasing an updated iPad and Android tablet version in the coming weeks. The updates will include an updated user experience that includes a redesigned home screen, updated layout for tagged results from TV and music, and a new way to browse content your friends have tagged.
With the update, Shazam CEO Andrew Fisher says that it will “optimize discovery, engagement, transactions, and exploration in a tablet environment. It’s the most efficient way to experience more of the media around you whether you are in your home or in any other environment throughout the world.” It was a little more than a year ago when Shazam said that it had over 175 million users worldwide with 5 million pieces of content “Shazam-ed” each day. The update to the iPad and Android tablet versions won’t be available until the coming weeks. Google in talks with labels over streaming music service -- report | Internet & Media.
Will One Of These Music Apps & Services Be The Next Big Thing At SXSW? Every year, music and tech nerds alike descend on Austin, Texas, for South By Southwest, hoping to emerge from the fray the next big band, the next big app, the next big film — and, one would hope, not wholly ravaged by alcohol and sleeplessness. The festival is still a little more than a month away, but SXSW is now out with a list of music/tech stars hoping to come out on top: The SXSW Music Accelerator 2013 Finalists.
SXSW Accelerator is a competition five years running that pits innovative companies against each other for a chance to nab the tech spotlight — or, as SXSW put it: “The opportunity to receive exposure to the SXSW audience looking out for the latest in cutting-edge technology.” (Along with some tech-related goodies and other fripperies.) According to Mashable, “41% of the companies that have participated in the first two competitions received funding after the event,” which is ample enough reason to participate for many a bootstrapping company.

Interview by Greg Cochrane, words by Del Crookes and Anthony Baxter Newsbeat reporters 16 January 2013 Last updated at 06:34 Share Universal Music's head of digital says there is a future for CD sales.
Paul Smernicki, the director of digital at Universal UK, spoke to Newsbeat as the music and entertainment retailer HMV went into administration. He said: "[The CD is] definitely not dead. "We'll see that format decline in terms of its value to the overall business but I certainly don't expect it to completely vanish, certainly not in my lifetime. " The label looks after artists from Rihanna and Eminem to newcomers such as BBC Sound of 2013 winners Haim, as well as AlunaGeorge.
According to the body which represents big record labels, the BPI, nearly 70 percent of all albums sold last year were CDs, but digital albums sales are growing. Paul Smernicki says one of the biggest focuses now is on streaming music. Première campagne de pub pour Deezer. Next Big Sound's 2012 State of Online Music. Beats' Daisy Project Revealed, CEO Ian Rogers Declares 'Mission To Win' [Details & Analysis] Today Beats By Dre announced that Topspin's Ian Rogers is CEO of Beats' upcoming Project Daisy music streaming subscription service as well as MOG, the service on which Daisy will be built.
Trent Reznor is Chief Creative Officer. In the conference call the big message seemed to be, "We're going to do this right, not like the other guys. We're going to take streaming subscription services to the mainstream and we're going to win. " Normally I would simply share the news from whatever sources are available and insert some commentary as relevant. This time I'm going to include more meta commentary as well, though back in my days at ProHipHop, that cost me future access.
Inside Daisy - An Analysis The conference call included Beats CEO Jimmy Iovine, President and COO Luke Wood and new Project Daisy CEO Ian Rogers. When asked if Project Daisy would emphasize high quality sound, Iovine basically said no but they'd do the best they can given the difficulties they face. More: Why Are People Still Buying CDs? Amazon announced AutoRip on Thursday, a free service that gives consumers a cloud-based backup for every CD they've bought from the company since 1998. For Amazon, it's another move towards ensuring that consumers consider the company their primary stream of content, whatever the format.
However, the introduction of the service raises another question: Why are people still buying CDs in 2013? After all, most music is available online in a format that's usually cheaper than CDs and doesn't take up shelf space. Yet, the CD is still the predominant format for music buying. Consumers bought 193 million CDs in 2012 vs. 118 million digitally downloaded albums, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Though digital continues to grow at a rapid clip, it will probably be a couple of years before CD buyers become the minority. There's also reason to believe that CDs will still hold a significant share of the market for some time. YouTube : mais où sont passés les 2 milliards de vues ? US album sales fell 4% in 2012 but streaming impact unknown. Nielsen SoundScan has published US music sales figures for 2012, and as ever there is debate around what they indicate about the impact of streaming services on traditional sales. The bad news: overall album sales fell 4% from 331m units in 2011 to 316m units in 2012, for the usual reasons of digital growth not outstripping physical decline. CD sales dropped by 13% while digital album sales rose 14%, taking them to 37% of overall album sales. The 4% drop in overall album sales might be worrying, given the industry celebrations in January last year about a 1% rise in 2011.
Then again, a 4% fall is still better than the annual declines seen in the years before 2011. A 5.1% rise in single-track digital sales to 1.34bn units can also be seen as a bright spot for the US in 2012, especially when considering the downloads/streaming cannibalisation debate. It’s worth considering, too. The Nielsen SoundScan figures focus on unit sales, not a.) revenues or b.) streams. Twitter Lets Users Add Music To Their Profiles.
