Introduction Ambroise Paré’s 1573 medical treatise, Des Monstres et prodiges, sheds light on the diverse physical singularities which turned a human body into a monstrous one in the eyes of early modern Europeans (1841, 1-68).

“I, poor monster” («Twelfth Night», II. 2. 33): Monsters as Subjects in «A Midsummer Night’s Dream» and «The Tempest» — Anglais

A girl suffering from hypertrichosis, an excessive amount of hair growth, an infant born without a left leg, a hermaphrodite, a boy with a human trunk and the legs of a dog and conjoined brothers all appear in the study of Henri III’s surgeon. When Shakespeare wrote his plays, a body was therefore deemed monstrous when it featured an excess, a lack, when it was deformed, or when it transgressed the ontological distinctions between the human and the animal, between the sexes or between the singular and the plural. Showing that monsters were seldom depicted as feeling and thinking entities in the early modern places and texts in which they appeared, the first part of this paper will highlight the originality of Shakespeare’s staging of Caliban and Bottom. 1. 2. 3.

Logical Fallacies Part Deux – GMAT edition – YPrep Academy

He does a great job listing out and explaining a lot of common fallacies. The thing is, there are quite a few of them. Just take a look at the wiki. I’m just going to interject here a bit to reduce and refine the list to one more suited to people who are looking to prepare for the GMAT or the GRE. If you take a look at the wiki list of fallacies, it may seem overwhelming. Since we are not taking a formal logic class we are mostly talking about non-structural logical fallacies.

Causal flaws are perhaps most common. Sampling flaws are issues regarding representative sampling. Analogies flaws are pretty much the classic “apples and oranges” problem. These are just the major types of logical fallacies you can see in the GMAT. Logical Fallacies II. Effective Arguing; Beware of Logical Red-Herrings - Operational Excellence Society.

As I am apt to, from time to time, I recently attended a conference on Operational Excellence and Change Management.

Effective Arguing; Beware of Logical Red-Herrings - Operational Excellence Society

There were two issues related to one another that came-up time and again from the “Change-Agents” as being a challenge and those were; 1) How do I get the support of management and 2) How do I get people on-board the program. As we discussed these challenges and how to overcome them, I was struck by how ill-equipped some of the Change-Agents were with effectively arguing their points – or worse, effectively counter-arguing points against their positions and plans. Arguing (or debating), as opposed to quarrelling, is a necessary and key component of the process of discovery and understanding. Without it, two (or more) people will never achieve a consensus for moving forward. Logical Fallacies II. Unit 1: Identifying Misconceptions & Logical Fallacies.
