Ed launches an interactive periodic table with a video for every element

This tool was groundbreaking for many reasons–including the fact that Mendeleev planned with incredible foresight, leaving space for any new elements that would be discovered beyond his time. The history of the periodic table is fascinating, but If you’ve ever taken a chemistry class, you know that memorizing those elements and understanding their properties can be difficult! To help provide a refresher and a study aid of sorts, TED-Ed collaborated with Brady Haran, best known for his YouTube channel Numberphile and his extensive video coverage of the periodic table, to create a clickable periodic table with videos on every element.

Periodic Table

It's something I've been working on, a bit at a time, for the past few weeks. Modelling each object in 3D proved to be a huge task and took a lot longer than I originally thought but the feeling of completing it was awesome. On top of it all, I've learnt way more about the elements researching for this than I ever did in school :) Click for larger image. Apologies if the image seems a little on the small side, it's to prevent the bad people from stealing and printing it. Edit, July 2011: Even over a year later, I still haven't managed to make prints of this available, so if anyone knows of a good company who can do affordable, large (A2+) quality prints, please let me know!

Electron orbitals are the probability distribution of an electron in a atom or molecule. 10 April 2001: A minor update to Orbital Viewer has been posted.

Atomic Orbitals

The electron orbitals presented here represent a volume of space within which an electron would have a certain probability of being based on particular energy states and atoms. For example, in a simple lowest-energy state hydrogen atom, the electrons are most likely to be found within a sphere around the nucleus of an atom. In a higher energy state, the shapes become lobes and rings, due to the interaction of the quantum effects between the different atomic particles. In addition to technical merits, they make pretty pictures. The shape of the orbital depends on many factors. These shapes continue on infinitely, getting ever more lobes or rings on them. A note about the drawings: All of the pictures on this page were produced by the program Orbital Viewer, written by myself.
