The Ten Lost Tribes of Israel refers to those tribes of ancient Israel that formed the Kingdom of Israel , and which disappeared from biblical and all other texts after the kingdom was destroyed in about 720 BCE by Assyria . [ 1 ] Many groups have traditions concerning the continued hidden existence or future public return of these tribes. This is a subject based upon written religious tradition and speculation. In declaring his unabashed conviction that "the Lost Tribes are indeed nothing but a myth", Tudor Parfitt writes that,
I missed blogging Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, because the days were rushed and we all enjoyed our first break all week. So, to catch you up, here's Friday: Friday For us, OSCon kind of fizzled out: we had a busy day on Friday, going to the Women in Open Source talk (you'd be surprised how many attended!), then the EU Software Patents talk with Marten Mickos (MySQL), Michael Tiemann (Red Hat), and Hartmut Pilch (FFII).
Spacing out in the classroom is usually frowned upon by teachers. But some students can turn real thoughts of space into an art teacher's pride. This year's Space Foundation Student Art Contest attracted 1,500 prekindergarten to high school students from the U.S., Pakistan and Turkey with the theme “Space is Infinite – Explore.” Astronauts will present the 36 winners at the 28th National Space Symposium later this month in Colorado Springs. From stargazing in sleeping bags to shuttle launches and science fiction landscapes, students made drawings, paintings and mixed-media pieces depicting space.
New Online Database Enables Researchers to Update Risks to Crew Health An online database of critical medical conditions that could impact the health and performance of crew members on future long-duration space missions has been established. The NASA Human Research Wiki is an online collaborative environment developed to enable authors internal and external to NASA to update the evidence base for medical conditions which are of concern for spaceflight. This evidence base, which is key to designing adequate medical support for these novel missions, is available to the general public through the NASA Human Research Wiki.
The law that President Obama is set to sign this week is expected to unleash a wave of crowdfunding . That promises to give some startups access to capital they wouldn't have had otherwise, but it could set up unwary entrepreneurs for a headache. Crowdfunding is a way of raising capital that involves getting small amounts of money from a large number of investors. A new law, called the JOBS Act , changes the formerly donate-to-my-cause-for-a-tote-bag industry into a popular way for small companies to raise the cash in two ways: It allows businesses to raise money from investors in exchange for a piece of their company (equity) and it allows non-accredited investors (regular Joes and Janes like your neighbor and Grandma) to sink their own cash into startups. When Facebook goes public later this spring, its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, will be following in the footsteps of a long line of Silicon Valley tech entrepreneurs that includes Steve Jobs and Google's Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Matthew Hawkins – 361 days Is Lana Del Rey, a real life pop star, less authentic than Hatsune Miku, a completely digital diva? That's the argument proposed by Mike Rugnetta in the second installment on the PBS Ideal Channel, the public broadcaster's new YouTube presence. Del Rey, one of indie pop's hottest acts in the U.S., is a singer/songwriter best known for the song "Video Games" (which in fact, is not about video games at all). Despite her popularity, a lot of people don't like her.
Kate Middleton’s family gets coat of arms The new Coat of Arms for Catherine Middleton's family is displayed at the College of Arms in London in London England. Catherine Middleton will use this Coat of Arms until her April 29th royal wedding to Britain's Prince William, when it will be merged with his Coat of Arms. Image by: Suzanne Plunkett - WPA Pool / Getty Images Kate Middleton’s family unveiled a new coat of arms on Tuesday commissioned by her father Michael in time for her marriage to Prince William and designed with the approval of England’s senior herald. The coat of arms features three acorns representing the Middleton children, chosen because the oak tree traditionally symbolises England and strength, and a gold chevron to represent Kate’s mother whose maiden name was Goldsmith.
To put the problem in the simplest terms, the interests of the client continue to be sidelined in the way the firm operates and thinks about making money. Goldman Sachs is one of the world’s largest and most important investment banks and it is too integral to global finance to continue to act this way. The firm has veered so far from the place I joined right out of college that I can no longer in good conscience say that I identify with what it stands for. It might sound surprising to a skeptical public, but culture was always a vital part of Goldman Sachs’s success. It revolved around teamwork, integrity, a spirit of humility, and always doing right by our clients. The culture was the secret sauce that made this place great and allowed us to earn our clients’ trust for 143 years.
