(I know. Most people live in 3 dimensions, but not me. Don’t even get me started on the 4th.) This medium of porcelain is also a first for me, a rare step outside of wood panels and glazed oil paint… though I couldn’t resist indulging in my dearest vice and surest standby, finishing these off with fine lines of gold striping enamel. Decorative habits die hard. I went into this experiment (learning porcelain slip casting from Peter Lutz, in a class at the Steel Yard) with one real intention; to let something unexpected happen.

I’m happy to say that my intention-to-be-less-intentional definitely bore some fruit. Anyway, the primary thing that I had completely and utterly failed to take into account when I first got the idea of casting porcelain thingies was that they would be hollow. Either way, I’m happy with the results. These are just a few photos… I’ve been loading the rest to flickr and even put a few in my Etsy store. Chinese Pears. Sena Gu Lemon Squeezer. She creates these vessels with traditional Asian glazes by making plaster molds around a fruit or vegetable and casting them in porcelain. Iwamoto's beautiful ceramic representations of fruits and vegetables found in Southern California are available for purchase at the Japanese American National Museum, the Craft and Folk Art Museum and the Pasadena Museum of California Art. (Can't wait to eat the purple potatoes, spring onions, chard, fava beans, sausage and chevre!!) So these bowls spoke to me. The ceramic bowls are created by using vegetables as the mold and colored to resemble the color of the vegetable. Long lasting, beautiful and inspired by nature. You could easily make a whole series of these.

Vienna, Austria based designer Micher Traxler designed and made these bowls, which were recently show at the Milan Design Fair. The product was borne out of the team’s interest in texture and natural materials, as well as the ubiquity and importance of avocados in mexican culture and cuisine. the avocado bowls are cast from a two-part mold formed from a real avocado. the designers utilize the smooth varietal of the fruit to create a brown model, whose exterior is left raw and interior is glazed; as well as the rougher hass species, used primarily to make white porcelain dishes. each piece is glazed by hand in brown, white, or a specialty colour glaze, and fired for 14 hours. full viewimage © designboom additional view concept sketch.
