Collect any promising bits and pieces you come across (that you are willing to dedicate to craft-only use). A few good places to start are your kitchen (or office) junk drawer, that little box or jar in the craft room where you put stuff that has no real use (but that you can't bear to throw away), and the jar where you store rancom bits of hardware (or the bottom of your tool box, or wherever else such odds and ends accumulate). Cath Ball Stitched Ceramics at Tent London

Her work combines both ceramics and embroidery. These new vases are slip cast from a mould and have become a canvas for a line of hand-stitched thread, inspired by coastlines. Cath graduated from Cumbria Institute of the Arts in 2004 after studying Contemporary Applied Arts. Inspired by a visit to the ‘Art of the Stitch’ exhibition during her studies, she aims to develop work that successfully combines the two disciplines of embroidery and ceramics. She uses fine white porcelain clay and simple forms into which she pierces holes to then stitch by hand. You can see Cath's porcelain lace collection here, and all these beautiful new designs will be available to buy on madebyhandonline after the Festival. Three Potters Share Their Best Sgraffito Tips, Plus a Bonus Video!

My sgraffito tool tips are made from the main spring of a pocket watch. The spring metal is thin and strong, doesn’t have to be sharpened and keeps the same feel as it wears away. To make the tip, cut a piece of spring, heat it with a small torch and bend it to the shape you want. A small rounded point is used for the line cutting tips, and a broader rounder tip for large cuts. See Wayne’s complete guide to sgraffito in this Ceramic Art Lesson Plan! Layer by Layer: Building Narrative Pottery Surfaces With Intricate Stencils, Slips, and Sgraffito

Layering the Surface Plastic stencils adhere best to leather-hard clay—keep forms well wrapped prior to decorating. Once you have determined placement for the first layer of stencils (three crop dusters in this case), tack them down with a small brush dipped in clean water (figure 7). The beauty of using this thin plastic is the ability to see water spread under the stencil, which helps ensure edges seal to the clay. Use as little water as possible—just enough to make the clay surface tacky. Following the lines of your cutout, gently work the stencil into the clay. After the slip sets to leather hard, use a very soft pencil to sketch out areas of sgraffito.

With sgraffito complete (minus the corn tassels), use latex to mask out corn that will fall within the dust stencil (figure 10). The range is 100 per cent local, in both its inspiration and its conception. ‘I find my inspiration in the beauty of our serene environment, nestled between the Groenland and Hottentots-Holland mountain ranges,’ says Era-Marie, who created the designs of the ceramics. Gideon, who is responsible for the graphics, says that, ‘the Eucalyptus trees were inspired by the imagery of Era’s family farm in the Overberg region.’

Era explains that the manufacturing process is a collaborative effort of locally sourced artisans, which aims to enhance the sustainability of the regional economy and industry. ‘We started off by using existing ceramic moulds which were available in the marketplace.
