All our Actions are building our Ship for sailing the Universe on our constant Trip through the Wormholes of Space and Time that separate Life from all that is Sublime. Copyright Ted DeMaine: Passport of Love, Album “The Shark & the Crow” 2006 This body of work further examines my life’s journey through the “Exploration of the Sublime”, and I reference the above lyrics. The word Sublime conjures up many responses, with the Beauty/Sublime dichotomy being the most prevalent. In my work I explore the notion that the sublime is an extension of beauty.
In this journey my inspirations come not only from my responses to my husband’s poems/lyrics but also the superb Chinese ceramics and paper cuts that I encountered during my Chinese journey in 2008. Johanna DeMaine 2009.
Cosmicomics. Ceramics. Layers of Color: Using Different Colors of Casting Slip, Resist Patterns and Decals to Create Graphical Pottery Surfaces. Andrew Gilliatt’s work combines colored porcelain slip, brightly colored glazes, resist patterns, and simple decals to create pots that convey the fun he has working in the studio. (click image to enlarge!) I was so blown away by the work of cover artist Andrew Gilliatt on the upcoming January/February 2011 issue of Pottery Making Illustrated that I just had to share the article as a sneak peek in the blog today. With an undergraduate degree in graphic design, Andrew adorns his slipcast pottery with well-placed, layered, often humorous imagery that is just fantastic in my humble opinion.
And the process that he uses to achieve his layered look is pretty interesting as well. Today, Andrew explains how he arrives at his surfaces by adding color in stages with colored casting slip, glaze, and decals. Plus, he shares his casting slip and a couple of glaze recipes! Lorea Sinclaire - Industrial Design - Vancouver, Canada.

Johanna DeMaine: Creating Bright Textured Surfaces with Raised Enamels, Lusters and a Sandblaster. “Landscape of the Mind," 2006. Clear glaze, gas fired 2336°F (1280° C) in oxidation. Interior: gold luster, sandblasted, enamel. Exterior: mother-of-pearl, sandblasted, gilded, enamel, fired 1472°F (800° C). In the collection of the National Gallery of Australia. Australian potter Johanna DeMaine feels she came to clay by default. Early on, a teacher ridiculed her artwork, leaving her feeling she was not artistic. Currently DeMaine’s work is thrown using Southern Ice Porcelain, bisqued to 1868°F (1020°C) in an electric kiln, and glaze fired to 2336°F (1280°C) in a gas kiln, with clear or celadon glaze. The work these days follows three distinct paths.
In her second body of work, she fires on clear glaze, then luster. Her most recent pieces involve the vinyl cutter as well, but in these she sandblasts patterns into the bisque, covers that with a celadon to emphasize the texture, and embellishes areas with gold luster and enamel dots. 2 Gotas / 4 Gotas Bowls by Veronica Martinez. We believe that the skills of making and thinking can develop in tandem, and that the made object is a vehicle for expression that can engage with the individual and society.
