Android has overtaken iPhone in the US market for the first time, while worldwide, sales of phones running the Google OS have leapt by a huge 886%. In the second quarter, according to new research from Canalys, Android's US growth was 851% year-on-year, almost as high as the global average, even though it was starting from a higher base in its strongest territory. The US smartphone market as a whole grew by 41% year-on-year, in unit sales terms, said the researchers, making it the largest base for the open OS handsets in the world. Within that, Android devices accounted for 34% of sales, overtaking RIM and Apple for the top spots. Canalys particularly singled out Verizon's aggressive promotion of its Droid range, the latest flagships being the HTC Incredible and Motorola Droid X.

By John Letzing , MarketWatch SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Roughly nine months after Google Inc. edged out rival Microsoft Corp. to win a high-profile contract to supply email and collaboration software to the City of Los Angeles, the company has missed a June deadline for full implementation due to lingering security concerns. The delay is a setback for one of Google's most strategic businesses, and an illustration of troubles that large organizations can encounter as they shift to a so-called "cloud computing" model, in which data and applications are stored and accessed online. Google's /quotes/zigman/93888 /quotes/nls/goog GOOG -0.08% failure to have all municipal employees outfitted with Google Apps by the June 30 deadline will have the company and its implementation partner reimbursing L.A. for extra costs, as the city continues to rely on former supplier Novell Inc. , according to Los Angeles Chief Technology Officer Randi Levin.

Five Trends Shaping Data Center Designs - CIO.com - Business Technology Leadership
CIO — In the past, companies built data centers like parents buy clothes for their children: Buy big and wait for the kids to grow into them. However, companies that designed spacious data centers ended up wasting a lot of money, powering unnecessary infrastructure. Today's data-center design decisions all pivot around maximizing efficiency, while giving companies a path for future growth, says Steve Sams, VP of global site and facilities services for IBM ( IBM ). "We see our customers make very different design decisions than they used to," Sams says. "And the end result is that they are saving 30 percent in operational costs over the lifetime of the data center."TechShower
