If you need further proof of the remarkable breadth of the genre in 2010, look no further than HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” an amazing new dramatic series courtesy of one of cinema’s masters (Martin Scorsese) and one of television’s (“The Sopranos” veteran Terence Winter).

With production values that put most feature films to shame, a depth of ensemble we’ve only seen a few times in the medium, and a storytelling ambition more common in award-winning fiction, “Boardwalk Empire” takes the sky-high expectations of this long-anticipated project and shatters them. With a density of ensemble that approaches “The Wire” and “Deadwood,” “Boardwalk Empire” refuses to hold your hand on a journey though Prohibition Era Atlantic City. From the paisans in the late 1800s, cracking heads on the lower end of Manhattan, to Bugsy and his boys in the desert heat of Las Vegas. But no time was greater for a mobster than prohibition, when any stunad with a backyard brewery could flip a bottle of moonshine for a profit. Boardwalk Empire, HBO’s new series about Atlantic City in the 1920s, brings us back to this golden age. The lead character, Nucky Thompson, runs the show in AC — a local politician who’s always shaking hands, kissing babies and bringing in moonshine from the north.

The fourth episode of “Boardwalk Empire” – possibly the young show’s best episode yet – reveals that the series is something completely unexpected: It’s a love story. Sure, the trappings of a gangster tale are all present, and the overriding narrative is about how Nucky Thompson consolidates his power and becomes the top crime lord in Atlantic City. But the soul of the series is an essentially romantic one. This is a story about a man and a woman who have no real reason to run into each other but then find a kind of intoxicating fascination in each other. A multitude of TV critics -- including the Post's own Hank Stuever -- had already trumpeted "Boardwalk Empire" as an example of epic, grand-scale television of the finest order. And as promised, last night's premiere episode boasted rich sets, a sense of cinematic scope (thanks to direction by the great, aforementioned Scorsese) and numerous convincing performances, particularly from Steve Buscemi as the Big Boss of a bygone Atlantic City, Nucky Thompson. But unlike The Hollywood Reporter's James Hibberd, I'm not head over heels in love just yet. As beautifully crafted as "Boardwalk Empire's" first episode was, it dragged a bit in spots.

Anyway, apparently I am not the only one who admired "Empire" but felt emotionally lukewarm about the show. HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire' renewed for second season after premiere nets 4.8 million viewers.
