Known as the Crooked Cottage, this mysterious, rural Hertfordshire home still has a made-up double bed, full jars of gooseberries and a calendar. It is said to have been lived in by a married couple. The fading history of Illinois: The state's ten most endangered buildings from the home of bluesman Muddy Waters to the red-brick home of one of Chicago's first settlers that have been left to crumble into ruins

The list includes the former home of Chicago Blues master Muddy Waters, a gorgeous waterfront antebellum home and an historic orphanage for black children that opened after the Civil War. Landmarks Illinois, the group that released the list, hopes to bring attention to the historic sites that are in great need of tender loving care and funding from local community leaders and property developers. 'By publicizing them we hope to bolster local advocacy efforts and build support towards each property’s eventual preservation,' the group said in a press release on Tuesday.

Since the group began publicizing the 'Top 10 Endangered' list in 1995, they have been able to assist in salvaging 52 historic sites across the state.
