Cove Park Shipping Containers: An Inspiring Cluster of Green Roofed Artist Retreats

Called Cove Park, the cluster of cargotecture is part of a center for creative professionals located on the west coast of Scotland. Situated on 50 acres of emerald-colored countryside, the tidy suites were built using recycled shipping containers and are topped with an insulating layer of grass. The architects who developed Cove Park, Urban Space Management, installed the 6 containers that make up the community in only three days. Dutch designer Floris Hovers created his surprisingly simple ‘Wrapped’ stools out of a few pieces of wood with biodegradable rope wrapped around them.

The word ‘Wrapped’ is a translation of the Dutch word ‘Ingewikkeld‘, which means both ‘wrapped’ and ‘complicated’ in one single word – a nod to Hovers’ fixing technique. The flat pack stools use neither glue nor screws and consists of some wooden parts and approximately 110 meters of rope. They come in different colors including olive, vermilion, red wine, stone grey and pure white birch plywood.

Meassuring 13 x 13 x 18 inches high, they could be used as stools or as handy side tables. A Design Academy of Eindhoven‘s graduate, Floris Hovers explores the relationship between play and work, the balance between man and machine, calling his art “industrial craft”. These shelves are held firmly in place by pressure created from the shelf itself, there are no screws, mounting hardware, or levitation tricks - all they need is two opposing walls, and they're good to go.

This simple shelving unit fits between any two walls. In my case, a tiny closet in my room that was waisted storage space that I thought I'd improve. The opening to the storage space is oddly smaller than the space itself (it's an old quirky house), so the fact they are pressure fit and self standing was actually a byproduct of the fact that I needed a method of installation where the shelf could be rotated into position, since the full width shelf wouldn't fit into place any other way. The shelves are constructed from some simple dimensional lumber from Home Depot. They're 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" and 66 inches tall.
