The Future of Energy Is About Technology, Not Fossil Fuels

Oil forecasters have had the same long-term challenge for decades: figuring out how much of the world’s liquid hydrocarbons will be in demand years into the future, and where, and in what mix of products and uses. And for decades, the long-term view has been pretty much consistent: in aggregate, global demand increases as the economy and population grow. Near-term lines are jagged (current oil demand is more than ten million barrels per day lower than it was a year ago, thanks to Covid-19); long-term lines are smooth and moving up. Explore dynamic updates of the earth’s key data points There’s something different though in the two most recent long-term forecasts, from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and the International Energy Agency. The Green Hydrogen Revolution Is Now Underway. While renewables are now the fastest growing energy industry, hydrogen is following closely behind in a massive gale.

The Green Hydrogen Revolution Is Now Underway

The 21st century will likely witness the rise of a mega-billion hydrogen fuel industry. Countries are taking first steps – and it’s breathtaking. With the announcement of its 10-year $10.5 billion Green Hydrogen roadmap earlier this month, Spain joins a slew of other countries seeking to develop this once ‘dirty’ chemical feedstock into a zero-emission fuel for trucking, aviation, and shipping. By 2030 Spain aims to online 4 gigawatts (GW) of hydrogen electrolyzers – devices used to split water (H2O) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2). If this water electrolysis process is powered by renewable energy sources, the resulting hydrogen is virtually emission-less and therefor ‘green’. Levelized Cost of Energy and Levelized Cost of Storage – 2020. Lazard’s latest annual Levelized Cost of Energy Analysis (LCOE 14.0) shows that as the cost of renewable energy continues to decline, certain technologies (e.g., onshore wind and utility-scale solar), which became cost-competitive with conventional generation several years ago on a new-build basis, continue to maintain competitiveness with the marginal cost of selected existing conventional generation technologies.

Levelized Cost of Energy and Levelized Cost of Storage – 2020

This year’s LCOE, for the first time, includes a study of hydrogen as a supplemental fuel component for combined cycle gas generation. Additional highlights for LCOE 14.0: When U.S. government subsidies are included, the cost of onshore wind and utility-scale solar is competitive with the marginal cost of coal, nuclear and combined cycle gas generation. The former values average $31/MWh for utility-scale solar and $26/MWh for utility-scale wind, while the latter values average $41/MWh for coal, $29/MWh for nuclear, and $28/MWh for combined cycle gas generation. TransAlta Announces Commercial Operation of Alberta's First Utility Scale Battery Storage Project - Saur Energy International. TransAlta Renewables has announced that its 10 MW WindCharger battery storage project (WindCharger) began commercial operation on October 15, 2020.

TransAlta Announces Commercial Operation of Alberta's First Utility Scale Battery Storage Project - Saur Energy International

WindCharger is Alberta’s first utility-scale, lithium-ion energy storage project and utilizes Tesla Megapack technology. It has a nameplate capacity of 10 MW and total storage capacity of 20 MWh. This technology can be fully charged in approximately two hours and will be powered by the Company’s Summerview II wind farm, making it a truly renewable battery energy storage system. WindCharger did not require any new infrastructure investments as it is an entirely behind-the-fence project. The project, which was acquired from TransAlta Corporation (TransAlta) in August of this year, has a total capital cost of approximately USD 14.5 million, with approximately 50 percent being funded through the support of Emissions Reduction Alberta. That’s the analysis of BloombergNEF, which predicts a tipping point in five years when it will be more expensive to operate an existing coal or natural gas power plant than to build new solar or wind farms. Explore dynamic updates of the earth’s key data points The findings add to research showing why renewables are spreading in most power markets. Last week, the International Energy Agency said solar is starting to take over from coal as the cheapest form of electricity. But there is an economic limit to the spread of those sources of clean energy, BNEF’s Chief Economist Seb Henbest said at the research group’s annual conference in London on Monday.

Those constraints suggest renewables will gain no more than 70% and 80% of the market for electricity generation, depending on local conditions. Shipping Industry Faces Risks From Green Revolution. Another Major Breakthrough For Solar Energy. During America's last election cycle, one of President Trump's key campaign promises was to revive the dying coal sector and bring back coal jobs.

Another Major Breakthrough For Solar Energy

But even intense lobbying by the president has done little to stem the tide as coal plants continue to drop out at a steady clip. The recent retirement of TVA's giant 1,150 megawatt-Paradise 3 coal plant, despite Trump's impassioned pleas, serves as a grim reminder that coal's best days are behind it, with the U.S.
