I am a first year student here at Post University. Before pursuing my career as a teacher, I was just a regular undergraduate student fascinated with the world of STEM, where I complete my B.S. in Biology at Benedict College in Columbia, SC. After receiving my degree, I stepped into the teaching world through Teach for America, where I started as a 9th Grade Special Education Teacher. The following year, I became the 9th Grade Algebra I teacher, where I continue my title, a long with being the math department chair at my school.

She died at the age of 61 in 2013. Here is the TED appreciation of her life and work. In the video above Rita gives a rousing and inspiring speech about what it means to be a teacher. Explaining the calling of being a teacher, she says: Every child deserves a champion – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.
