NASA Releases an EPIC View of the Moon Transiting the Earth Taken From One Million Miles Away.

Australian student confirms that giant plasma tubes are floating above Earth. Astronomers have for the first time captured visual evidence of the existence of tubular plasma structures in the inner layers of the magnetosphere surrounding the Earth. “For over 60 years, scientists believed these structures existed but by imaging them for the first time, we’ve provided visual evidence that they are really there,” Cleo Loi of the ARC Centre of Excellence for All-sky Astrophysics (CAASTRO) and the School of Physics at the University of Sydney said.

Loi is the lead author on this research, done as part of her award-winning undergraduate thesis and published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. “The discovery of the structures is important because they cause unwanted signal distortions that could, as one example, affect our civilian and military satellite-based navigation systems. So we need to understand them,” she said. The plasma structures are explained in this clip: The innermost layer of the magnetosphere is the ionosphere, and above that is the plasmasphere. Earth’s Other ‘Moon’ And Its Crazy Orbit Could Reveal Mysteries Of The Solar System. We all know and love the moon. We’re so assured that we only have one that we don’t even give it a specific name. It is the brightest object in the night sky, and amateur astronomers take great delight in mapping its craters and seas.

To date, it is the only other heavenly body with human footprints. What you might not know is that the moon is not the Earth’s only natural satellite. As recently as 1997, we discovered that another body, 3753 Cruithne, is what’s called a quasi-orbital satellite of Earth. Cruithnes Orbit To help understand why it’s called a horseshoe orbit, let’s imagine we’re looking down at the solar system, rotating at the same rate as the Earth goes round the sun. Cruithne From A Stationary Earth Position Horseshoe orbits are actually quite common for moons in the solar system.

What’s unique about Cruithne is how it wobbles and sways along its horseshoe. Cruithne Close Up So Cruithne is our second moon. Possible clash: Venus J.Gabás Esteban, CC BY-SA. BreathingEarth1-3.gif (600×620)

Computer Graphics Group Selects NASA Earth Visuals for Showcase An annual conference that presents and publishes the best in computer graphics and technical research chose a NASA excerpt from the presentation, "Dynamic Earth: Exploring Earth's Climate Engine," as one of its select entries of 2012. The computer visualization is titled "Coronal Mass Ejection and Ocean/Wind Circulation. " It is also published today (June 19) as the 100th story for the award-winning NASA Viz iPad application. The Association for Computer Machinery's Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques is known as SIGGRAPH and is widely considered the most prestigious forum of its kind.

"Major Hollywood studios submit pieces, so there is a high standard," says Joshua Grow, SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival Chair, Los Angeles. Lucas, who wrote, directed and co-produced "Dynamic Earth," says that he's proud that nearly all the visualizations are based on real-world data. www.nasa.gov. Hyper Earth: the New World in 4k UHD.

2013 July 22 - Earth and Moon from Saturn.
