Ask Aaron Lee — Me Ranting About Twitter and Social Media. Twitter Social Network. Twitter launches Twitter 101. Twitter just launched a Twitter 101 “Special Guide” that explains the various aspects of the service in an overview format. The guide is broken down into 6 main sections: “What is Twitter”, “Getting Started”, “Learn the lingo”, “Best practices”, “Case studies” as well as an “Other resources” section.

The guide sits on the business.twitter.com subdomain and is clearly marketed towards businesses. It was written by Twitter along with Sarah Milstein, who is the co-author with Tim O’Reilly on The Twitter Book - a book that discusses how to use Twitter for business. The intro to the guide reads: Every day, millions of people use Twitter to create, discover and share ideas with others. The case studies section include companies such as Dell, JetBlue and Pepsi among others. Twittjr. (featured on BoingBoing!) Twittjr is a system that allows an IBM PCjr to search the public timeline on Twitter. In case you weren't aware, the IBM PCjr is a personal computer introduced in 1984 and has a 4.77MHz processor, 128KB of RAM, and uses 360KB floppy disks for storage.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. (click to enlarge) How does it work? You have a PCjr hooked up to an external dial-up modem, which is connected to a phone line. Elsewhere, you have a modern internet-connected computer (call it the "server") with another dial-up modem, connected to another phone line. What is it written in? The PCjr software is in Cartridge BASIC, a PCjr-specific flavor of IBM BASIC. The "server" software is a small Ruby script that uses only built-in libraries. Why Twitter on a PCjr? In my second year at RIT ('08-'09), I discovered a fully-functional PCjr gathering dust on a shelf in one of the Computer Science House common rooms.
