Photo Flash: Corella Ballet's Castilla y Leon 2010/10/13. The 2010-2011 season of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center begins by welcoming the debut of Spain's only classical ballet company Corella Ballet Castilla y León to the Ahmanson Theatre, November 5-7,2010. The company was founded by American Ballet Theatre principal dancer, Ángel Corella to promote classical ballet in Spain and to nurture Spanish dancers and offer them an opportunity to cultivate their talent in their home country. Corella Ballet Castilla y León offers a wide repertoire, incorporating classical, neoclassical and contemporary choreography. For the Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center engagement, the company will present two programs. Tenacity is the word that best describes this brilliant dancer who has momentarily dropped everything – or almost everything – to consolidate his young touring company.Ángel Corella’s first choreographic effort is set to Tchaikovsky’s string quartet “Souvenir of Florence” op. 70 composed in 1892.
Unfortunately Corella’s choreography does not live up to the quality of the music since the plethora of steps are performed at a vertiginous – and sometimes excessively accelerated – speed by performers given little opportunity to show their individuality or shine. The program will feature four ballets, one of which is a U.S. premiere by the company’s founder, our own Angel Corella, called String Sextet and set to Tchaikovsky — his first work of choreography! Dancers include Angel Corella himself, Herman Cornejo(!) , Carmen Corella(!) , and other principal dancers and first soloists from around the world including Iain Mackay, Adiarys Almeida, Natalia Tapia, Kazuko Omori, and Joseph Gatti.
