The Media module provides an extensible framework for managing files and multimedia assets, regardless of whether they are hosted on your own site or a 3rd party site - it is commonly referred to as a 'file browser to the internet'. Media is a drop-in replacement for the Drupal core upload field with a unified User Interface where editors and administrators can upload, manage, and reuse files and multimedia assets. Any files uploaded before Media was enabled will automatically take advantage of the many of the features it comes with. Media's aim is to solve Drupal's long standing media handling problem. What is the difference between 1.x and 2.x? The 7.x-1.x version is the stable and recommended version for most users and production sites. It has reached feature freeze and will not be getting any new features, only bug fixes.
The 7.x-2.x version offers a lot of new improvements and is currently the active development version for new features and UI improvements. Features Requirements Credits. File entity (fieldable files) File entity provides interfaces for managing files. It also extends the core file entity, allowing files to be fieldable, grouped into types, viewed (using display modes) and formatted using field formatters. File entity integrates with a number of modules, exposing files to Views, Entity API, Token and more. File Entity is required by the 7.x-2.x branch of the Media module. The File entity project is not compatible with Media 7.x-1.x. Requirements Known Issues If you are having problems with the alternate and title text fields when using image fields without the Media module widget, there is a core patch in #2066275-1: (followup: tests) file_field_load() overwites any field item properties with file entity properties that will resolve it that hasn't been included in an official release yet.

The Asset module proposes a new approach to the media management in Drupal, resolving a long-standing problem of reusable media files (images, videos, documents, etc) that evolved into the problem of reusable media content (images/videos/documents/etc with the attached content like description/licence/etc).
The Asset module provides new entity called Media Asset and the set of Media Assets examples (Image, Video, Audio, Document, Image Gallery, Free HTML), which can be enabled optionally. Brand new interactive UI is now available in the stable package and on demonstration website. Scald: Gallery. Scald Gallery is a gallery provider for Scald. There is a bundled scald_galleria module that provides a Galleria player. The latest Galleria library requires jQuery 1.7+. If you use the stock jQuery 1.4, please download an older version, like Galleria 1.2.9. Versions The deprecated 1.x branch was started by slashrsm and is feature complete. It uses plupload for file upload, Galleria for gallery display, and only images can be used in a gallery.The 2.x branch leverages multiple upload types (to be available in Scald 1.1), supports any atom types, has better UI etc. It is the only supported branch and is backward compatible with 1.x.
