There are victories in the war on surveillance. Just this April, years of campaigning by the Open Rights Organisation, Privacy International, NO2ID and Liberty, among others, helped kill off the British government’s ‘Snooper’s Charter’ that sought to monitor all our internet and social media usage in a ‘massive extension of state power’ as even one Conservative called it, while a committee of MPs said the bill ‘trampled on the privacy of British citizens’ while adding nothing to their security. When Deputy PM Nick Clegg refused to back the bill, this rare good deed seemed to be the fatal blow. http://newint.org/blog/2013/05/02/war-against-surveillance/

Consumerism has a very short lifespan left, because people are waking up to the douchebags in the advertising industry. by cdancer Aug 10

I forgot to add that the douche bags that employ this method are just that, douche bags - because most often they have never explored the realm of ethics in advertising and if they are genuinely benefiting people and the EARTH. by cdancer Aug 10

Starsuckers is a feature documentary about the celebrity obsessed media, that uncovers the real reasons behind our addiction to fame and blows the lid on the corporations and individuals who profit from it. Made completely independently over 2 years in secret, the film journeys through the dark underbelly of the modern media. Using a combination of never before seen footage, undercover reporting, stunts and animation, the film reveals the toxic effect the media is having on us all and especially our children.
http://www.realitysandwich.com/inception_meme Regardless of whether you loved or hated it, or worse, you were indifferent, Inception is a good object to think with. And I think Christopher Nolan is a clever filmmaker. Mind you, clever doesn't always mean wise. But he has a knack for making films that can splinter your mind. Even the Batman franchise's The Dark Night had some deep guano buried within its pyrotechnics. But is Inception the zeitgeist film it aspires to be?

FRONTLINE: digital nation: watch the full program

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/digitalnation/view/ I wanted to wait a bit because it seemed like it'd be more interesting to listen to all of you. There used to be a name for what I was doing, "lurking" -- it dates back to a very different time in the net's history, when usenet and mailing lists were the main forms of communication. It was hard to talk about lurkers then, for the obvious reason that no one knew much about them; it hasn't gotten much easier since. The idea of lurkers has all but vanished now, buried by a succession of ways to try and slice and dice them: "eyeballs," pageviews, users, subscribers, friends, followers, etc, etc. I think these changes are relevant in this context because Doug's initial questions put a lot of emphasis on expression: participation and activism on the one hand, and a concern that "social networks" (as if there were any other kind) might be diminishing the quality of people's engagement, on the other.

This is a must watch video. Yes, it questions the status quo on tehcnology and it's benefits or in this case it's drawbacks. by cdancer Oct 31

CONFIRMED: Psychiatric Manual DSM-IV-TR Labels free Thinkers, non conformers as Mentally Ill - USWGO Alternative News

http://uswgo.com/confirmed-psychiatric-manual-dsm-iv-tr-labels-free-thinkers-non-conformers-as-mentally-ill.htm Author: Brian D. Hill It is now confirmed by USWGO News that the DSM-IV-TR Manual labels free thinkers, non conformers, civil disobedient advocates, those that question authority, and people considered hostile toward the government (aka Oath keepers and local militias) as mentally ill with the illness titled “oppositional defiant disorder” or ODD. It was reported on October 8 2010 from OffTheGrid News that anybody who is disobedient, defiant, a free thinker, or even considered hostile toward authority was to be labeled by psychiatrists as ‘Mentally Ill’. Now I have got my hands on a ebook version of the year 2000 version of the ‘Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR Fourth Edition (Text Revision) By the American Psychiatric Association version DSM-TV-TR (The non TR Version was said to be older and so I got the newer one which had the information that Off The Grid News warned about).

Canada faces Third World status unless education fixed: report

I thought this quote was interesting. I "feel" it hints at a need for discernment, "In the future, countries will compete on the basis of their collective brains," said Worzel, whose clients include Ford, IBM, Bell Canda, Xerox and Nortel. He said within a generation, the economics of highly industrialized countries will be divided into three types of workers..."
