Sibayan, Principal I, Dampe Elementary School On May 21, 2012,Monday, students, teachers, parents, baranggay officials, and other concerned citizens gathered in front of the Dampe Elementary School to mark the start of Brigada Eskwela – an event which also signified the beginning of School Year 2012-2013.
A parade led by the PTA members through the aid of baranggay officials and other volunteers served as the preliminary activity on its first day. For the benefit of those who do not know what Brigada Eskwela is, here are some of its whereabouts: Brigada Eskwela at first glance is the modern day bayanihan. But Brigada Eskwela is a thing not just limited to the very concept of bayanihan where a transfer of one’s nipa hut from one place to another, or harvesting of one’s rice field is being made. The 751 pupils using 34 classrooms across seven primary schools in Blackpool were studied over the 2011-12 academic year by the University of Salford’s School of the Built Environment and architecture firm Nightingale Associates. [partner id="wireduk"]The results, published in Building and the Environment, revealed that the architecture and design of classrooms has a significant role to play in influencing academic performance.
Architect Peter Barrett, the study’s lead author, said: “This is the first time a holistic assessment has been made that successfully links the overall impact directly to learning rates in schools. A few years ago, kids used to gather in the streets or in their neighborhood playground to play their favorite Larong Pinoy games like piko, patintero, taguan, tumbang preso, siato, luksong tinik, etc. These has been their regular and popular pastimes, as well as the favorite games of their parents and grandparents until new and modern forms of entertainment has taken over the interests of young kids. There are over forty (40) known Filipino games, and many of these are as challenging and competitive as Western games. Like an inventor they will exhaust their vivid and prolific imagination, energy and time to the hilt in crafting their own toys using limited resources they can find around them, like for instance, empty cans and spare wood which they will use to make vehicles, lanterns that maybe use as a flashlight complete with a handle and candle inside it (during the Halloween) or any musical instruments like drums (perfect for the Christmas Season), worn out flip-flops or slippers which they transform into boats during rainy days, plastic or sheet of papers, strings and spare bamboo to make their kites that could soar like a majestic Philippine Eagle (the second largest in the world), and unused papers to create their own Origami versions of assorted planes, boats, spaceships, boxes and the likes, and uses other indigenous materials to make their own toys that they will certainly enjoy.

I stepped outside the van and teachers started telling the kids to go back to their “classrooms.” Nine weeks after super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) barreled through most of the Visayas, the municipality of Medellin in northern Cebu was also damaged. Mrs. “The walls and the flooring were already cracked,” Arriesgado said. HOPE AND PROMISE. Before my 6 hour travel to Medellin, I mentally prepared myself what to expect. I can tell from Arriesgado her passion for her profession. “I love my students and they deserve better than this,” she said.
