Online Maths Activities. Posted by Mrs Kathleen Morris on Friday, August 31st 2012 We had a numeracy curriculum day at my school today and I was asked to present a workshop on online maths sites. The audience was diverse with teachers from all grade levels as well as CRTs (casual replacement teachers) and student teachers. I began by giving a few tips for using online maths sites. 1. Think of the learning intention first. When you find a good online activity, it can be tempting to want to just use it in your classroom. It’s important to think of the learning intention and then the resources, not the other way round. 2. 3. 4. 5. I shared one or two examples of maths resources that could be used for all four areas of our maths lesson structure. 1. A + Click: This site has quick activities for all age groups to develop logical reasoning and creative thinking. 2.
Virtual Manipulatives: A simple alternative to using the maths tools on the IWB software which I know many teachers find frustrating. 3. 4. A+ Click - Mathematics Games for All Grades. A+ Click is a free site full of online mathematics games for students at all grade levels. You can find games on A+ Click by selecting a grade level then selecting a topic. Alternatively, you select just a topic or just a grade level and browse through all of the games. Students do not need to register in order to play the games. Applications for Education If you're looking for some good practice activities for your students to use at home, A+ Click could be a good site to link to your classroom blog. H/T to Kathleen Morris and Sue Waters. Mobimaths-bringing math to life.
Mobimaths What it is: mobimaths is a brand new math app for iOS and Android devices. I love the mission of mobimaths: to move away from textbooks and rote memorization and toward real world problems with an emphasis on communication and collaboration. It doesn’t get better than that! I wish more education app developers would take note and follow suite! The current version of mobimaths for iDevices is a lite, free version. How mobimaths can enrich learning: mobimaths is a great addition to the math class.
