Catherine Hernandez / Pinterest. Tween gift idea: Pucker up. Confession: I love Valentine's Day. The candy, the decorations, the card exchanges. They all make me swoon. I've (happily) passed this adoration on to my children, and one of our favorite things to do together is make Valentine's Day gifts for our friends and family. There's nothing like receiving a thoughtful, homemade gift.

And there's truly nothing like bonding with your tween making that gift! If you like recycled, repurposed things that are kind of minimal, keep reading! What happened is that Tuesday is recycle night here in my street. And, as usual, I completely forgot about it, until Wednesday morning, which was obviously too late.

My entry looked this way ... pretty ugly. Considering also that we'll have guests over the week end. Put together the fact that I wanted to reduce this pile of boxes, and the fact that I love things made out of cardboard, means some craft action to me! * Grab your boxes * and empty can * a stone +/- the size of the can (gravel works too) * some scissors * a marker * glue --> let's upcycle now :) * cut the template of the vase (if you click on the picture should be the right size) * with a can opener, take off the top of the can (you can wash the can too) * place the top of the can in the middle of the vase template toward the top * place the stone under the can * mark a slot wide enough to fit the can and the stone xox, d. Tempera painting. Isn't this gorgeous? The piece above is an example of a process I call 'toothpaste batik', and was created by a 5th grader in my DragonWing Arts after-school art program. She started with a resist made of a 50/50 mix of toothpaste and aloe vera lotion. I have previously blogged about this fun process here and here and here and here. Check each of them out to see images inspired by Matisse, by Victorian architecture, and by dragons and castles and fantasy!

Anyhow - when the resist (above) was dry, the whole thing was painted with tempera, (but definitely NOT the washable sort). When the paint was dry, the piece was washed out to remove excess paint and resist, leaving behind the lovely white lines. Below is another student piece, a dragon cave, made by a third grade student. Lets walk through the entire process, step-by-step. A piece of fabric is stretched to get out wrinkles and taped directly over the drawing.

The resist is dry, and now she is ready to paint. One last thing... PAINTED PAPER. Recycled Bottle Art. The finished pieces in the morning light Gluing the painted bottles to the plywood base The first step-- taking a bunch of bottles and creating a nice design We made these as a part of a Sharing the Planet unit with Grade 2/3. The visual arts line of inquiry was "reusing and recycling different materials. " We started the project with a huge bottle collection-- the art room was ill equipped to deal with hundreds of bottles, it was out of control!

I printed out the photos of a few designs for each group and during the next class they chose one, recreated it and decided on the colors. Meanwhile, a wonderful helper in the Design Tech class cut out large pieces of plywood for me in the shape that the kids chose. The finished pieces were covered with clear varnish and hung outside on a wall near the play area. Create a Creature. Grades 3-5 Overview: Students learn that animals undergo adaptations—changes to body parts and behaviors—that help them survive. In Activity 1, students learn how scientists name all living things—including animals and plants that lived in prehistoric times. In Activity 2, students investigate adaptations in modern and prehistoric animals.

In the Closing Activity, students apply what they have learned to produce a drawing, a description, and a correctly named imaginary prehistoric sea creature. This lesson is one in a series designed to accompany the National Geographic film, Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure . We’re having a beautiful October so far here in Portland, and the kids are very excited about Halloween! Most of the excitement is about making decorations for the house. My son and I were going to make some paper bats for the window, and I decided to turn one of mine into a puppet.

Flying it around is quite fun – like a combination of a marionette and a kite. There’s a template below with instructions if you want to try it out. You can also see if your child wants to draw their own bat to cut out for a puppet! Click to see all Halloween toys and crafts Click on the image below, then print. Finger Puppets: Bat. Michelle my belle: Public Works of Art. While on vacation in San Diego I was able to cross #16 off my infamous LIST! We went and visited artist Niki De Saint Phalle's Queen Califia's Magical Circle in Escondido. It's funny, but if this wasn't on my "list", as much as I wanted to see it-I don't think we would have. And. That's why I have lists! It was 99º out so we had the place to ourselves. can u imagine! This place was so unassuming, in the back of a park, in Escondido!!

Maybe that's what seemed to make it even more special. I'd love to make some sort of mosaic sculpture for my yard someday. This was a treat to see. Niki De Saint Phalle was a prolific artist working in all types of mediums all over the world. Water Bottle Chandelier. May 7 I’ve wanted to make this chandelier for a few years now so it was especially fun for me to make this project. I first saw water bottle flowers on Magpie Design Studio’s amazing chandeliers. Then I saw a display in Anthropologie a few years ago that used them. They are so easy to make and I love that you are reusing the plastic water bottles.

This would be perfect for a party or even just for your living room! See full instructions and more photos after the jump. Click through for full instructions and photos. Materials Needed: Plastic Bottles (the cheap thin ones are easiest to work with), Spray Paint, 2 Metal Rings, Scissors + Exacto Knife, A Thin Gauge Wire. Step 1: Cut Bottles in half and cut varying sizes and shapes of petals out of the top and the bottom. A special thanks to Alexis Birkmeyer and Heidi Jo for helping me! I don’t know about you, but I am sooooo ready for warmer weather! Bright green leaves on the trees, flowers bursting with glorious colors and happy birds chirping! Here in southern Missouri we’ve had quite a harsh winter…lots of cold and snow… which makes me even more anxious for blissful springtime!

We’ve had a lot of cozy, sittin’-by-the-fire nights, for which I’m so thankful, but I’m pretty giddy for this happy new season! Although I’m going a bit simpler these days, I’m not quite at the minimalist level… no way I love junk too much! I recently got this chicken and rooster print at a local store in Ozark, MO. Then I added this old berry crate filled with eggs and a potted plant with some springy green. To add an Easter touch I added some colored eggs to the crate and decided Mama hen needed some chickies! Awake, awake, it’s springtime, the gentle breezes blow, the sunshine whispers to the flowers, awake, awake and grow!

And say with sunshine, chicks and flowers, SUNDAY BAKER: Book Page Flowers (Tutorial) Boy do I miss flowers. I miss them so much every winter, in fact, that when the first yellow dandelions pop up in our yard I actually sort of enjoy them. They are a color other than white, gray or dismal. I love these fun little paper flowers that are sooo easy to make and cost nothing! They really create a whimsical and pretty accessory too. You can put them in a vase or wrap them on a package. And I love the look of printed book pages. Perfect! To make the book page flowers you will need: several pages from an old, unused book glue gun buttons scissors tape Rip off several pages from your book (that have print on both sides) and make sure they are stacked evenly. Roll the strip up, pretty tight, pinching the bottom as you go. Tape the bottom tightly. Open this one up also. If you want an even thicker flower, you can repeat this step yet again, with the 3rd layer having an even bigger hole.

Next, I hot glued some vintage buttons onto the centers. (P.S. Freckle PhotoBlog » Art Projects. Newspaper art. Artistic Ways to Recycle Bottle Caps, Recycled Crafts for Kids. Cardboard Face Masks.
