I began by passing out sheets of sandpaper while the children were having their snack. I asked them to rub their hands on the sandpaper, and to think of words that described the way the paper felt. They used words like “pokey” and “lumpy” and scratchy”, and I chimed in with “rough”, and I had the children turn the paper over to the smooth side, and wetalked about how “rough” is the opposite of “smooth”. While they continued snacking, I showed them a blank tracing of a gingerbread cookie, and asked if anyone knew what it was. Yes sirree, they all knew that it was a gingerbread man. They weren’t too sure, so I passed around some cinnamon sticks, whole cloves and whole nutmeg and everyone felt them and smelled them.

They started by rubbing their sandpaper with the nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves. Scented snowflake tree ornament made with popsicle sticks. We are having so much fun making simple Christmas tree ornaments this year and adding some fun scents to them as well.
