Is the Diaphragm Coming Back? First New Model in 50 Years Hits the Market

For those unfamiliar to what a diaphragm is, the idea is simple: a flexible, dome shaped cup is vaginally inserted to block the cervix, thus preventing sperm from entering. This is awesome news for women looking for a non-hormonal option of birth control due to either medical conditions or personal choices. Its process of creation took 10 years and involved user feedback to make this a modern, easy-to-use device. Caya is different from other diaphragms because it comes in one size – cutting out the need for adjustment after losing weight or having a child. Other modernizations include a coiled, nylon spring and removal tab. In recent years, the diaphragm has essentially become non-existent in the world of birth control. When doctors examined her, they discovered that she had a potato lodged inside her vagina, and it had germinated. As much as this terrifying discovery sounds like an old wives' tale, it's not. The woman told doctors she had inserted the potato down there because her mother told her it would prevent pregnancy. Her story is cringeworthy, but it reveals a larger problem. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given that rejection, the rate of teen pregnancy in Colombia is incredibly high. But it's about more than just access. Internal Condom. My Dearest Perverts!

By Christie Barcelos MPPA, Mar 26, 2013, at 12:00 pm The representation of sexuality and safer sex in public health campaigns is fascinating given our simultaneous cultural obsession with yet pathologization of sexual behavior.

Cultural Messages in a Safer Sex Pamphlet for Transmen

Safer sex campaigns and materials not only seek to increase prevention behaviors but also produce a range of social meanings surrounding gender, bodies, and desire. Most are produced by organizations that fall well within the mainstream; others are not. This post is about one of the latter (warning: sexual explicitness). The following resource, titled “5 Reasons tm4mto Fuck a Transguy” was produced and distributed by a collaborative project of the San Francisco-based Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center. tm4m is a group for transgender men whose goal is to “provide information, education and support to transmen who have sex with men (both other transguys and cisguys).”

This material is interesting for two main reasons. Not everyone agrees this is good. Female Condoms: Sexy and Empowering or ‘Ew’? Dr.
