Acts 6:1-7 paints a vivid picture of diaconal ministry. Deacons are servants As the Greek behind the name implies, deacons are first and foremost servants. Deacons are qualified Paul lays out specific guidelines for the character of a deacon in 1 Timothy 3:8-13. Deacons are gifted While godliness might be commanded of all God’s people, a further quality that sets a deacon apart is gifting for a specific task. Should Pastors Lead the Church? “Kai” in the Greek is translated “and” properly in this verse and is in no way teaching that they are one and the same gift.

For example, if I owed you $25 and gave you three fives and one ten, does that make the fives and the ten one denomination? The answer is obviously no, they are two separate denominations. It is the same with Pastors and Teachers, they serve two separate functions. We will look at who the rulers are to be in the congregation later on but let us look at what the true function of the Pastor is to be. The Function of the Pastor The word “Pastor” in the Greek comes from the word “poimen” pronounced “poy-mane.” (Luke 10:3 KJV) Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. (Acts 20:29 KJV) For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Now we have read three verses which speak metaphorically about vicious animals attacking the flock.

The discussions resulted in assigning a higher status to ministers, commensurate with their education and training. Clergy salaries shot up, and the laity began to ask, "I wonder what ministers do? They earn almost $25,000! " Consequently there arose a new expectation that ministers should account for their time and show productive results that justified their higher salaries. Re porting became crucial. Accountability in any field builds trust. An extensive system of accountability could burden pastors, as well as those to whom they are responsible. Ministers must account for their time, ethics, theology, stewardship, and pastoral care. Periodically pastors should report to their official board concerning the distribution of their time during an average week. Please note that any accountability should be honest and presented with humility.
