Posted by whuber in VMware Virtualization on Sep 7th, 2011 | 0 comments Today I came across a client with a small 4 host vSphere 4.1 environment that uses a Windows XP VM and SQL 2005 Express Edition as the vCenter application and database server. Suddenly the vCenter service started crashing repeatedly, and the event logs indicated that it was because the SQL Express database for vCenter had reached its maximum allowed size of 4GB. The only way to recover from this is to either upgrade to Standard Edition in-place, or purge data from the database and shrink it.
We opted to go for the latter. VMware has made a SQL script available on KB 11000125 .
