La clasificación figura en la edición de enero 2012 del ranking mundial de repositorios que realiza el Laboratorio de Cibermetría del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, el mayor organismo público de investigación de España y el tercero de Europa. Las cifras, que se publican periódicamente, clasifican a los repositorios digitales de todo el mundo sobre la base de una evaluación de calidad y volumen de información, eficiencia en la estructura de datos y posicionamiento en la red.
Se tienen en cuenta el tamaño del sitio (cantidad de objetos digitales disponibles), la visibilidad en la web (estándares utilizados para una correcta navegación y aparición en buscadores), Archivos Ricos -o "Rich Files", que son archivos a texto completo, correctamente indizados- y el lugar que ocupan en Google Académico ("Scholar").
