Why go to graduate school in Physics? | Galactic Interactions. I just came accross an article at The Economist entitled The Disposable Academic: Why doing a PhD is a waste of time. This has prompted me finally to write this post, which I've intended to write for a long time (like so many other posts on my too-quiet blog). There is one, and only one, reason why you should go to graduate school in Physics or Astronomy. (This is probably true for any other field as well, but I'm going to stick to the field where I actually know what I'm talking about.) That one reason is: because you want to be a graduate student in physics for five or six years. It is true that if you want to teach physics at the University level, or that if you want to have a career in physics research where you're leading and doing you're own research, you need to get a PhD. However, going to graduate school because that's what you want to do is similar to buying a lottery ticket because you want to be a millionaire.

SMART - Science, Mathematics & Research for Transformation - Part of the National Defense Education Program. Theoretical Physics vs Physics (UK student) [Archive] - Physics Forums. In terms of math or physics or joint maths-phys, it will barely make a difference. Some universities offer things like physics w/ finance or maths w/ finance (stochastics, black scholes etc it's actually fairly interesting to see how things from statistical physics like Brownian motion relate to this stuff) which will make a difference (mainly to show an long standing interest in finance than for the actual knowledge!

As most people will be applying just for the money with no interest in finance this what they look for). I think the most desirable degree course would be economics from somewhere like LSE (the breeding ground of investment bankers) if you were set on this, mainly because of where it is and the chance to 'network'. The way it works at most investment banks is that they take on people of any degree discipline (usually numerical, but not always) as Analysts, and they take on people with a degree+MBA's as Associates. AppleScript: Beginner's Tutorial. The Target Property The value of the target property is a reference to the folder or disk whose contents are displayed in the Finder window. This value can be both read and changed. Let's examine both actions. First, let’s get the value of the target property of the frontmost window: The value of the target property of a Finder window is a reference to the folder whose contents are displayed in that window. tell application "Finder" to get the target of the front window A script getting the value of the target property of a Finder window.

As you can see, the result of this script is a reference to the folder whose contents are displayed in the Finder window, in this case your home directory. The returned object reference clearly shows, through the use of the possessive “of,” that the target folder is contained by the “Users” folder which is on the startup disk which is an element of the Finder application. Next, we’ll change the targets of the open Finder windows. Now try this script: Exercise 1: A Good First Program — Learn Python The Hard Way, 2nd Edition. Warning If you skipped Exercise 0 then you are not doing this book right. You must read every single thing I write here and read it carefully.

For example, are you trying to use Python 3 for this book? I said in Exercise 0 to not use Python 3, so you should not use Python 3. Are you trying to use IDLE or an IDE? You should have spent a good amount of time in Exercise 0 learning how to install a text editor, run the text editor, run the Terminal, and work with both of them. Type the following text into a single file named ex1.py. If you are on Mac OS X then this is what your text editor might look like if you use TextWrangler: If you are on Windows using Notepad++ then this is what it would look like: Don't worry if your editor doesn't look exactly the same, it should be close though.

I did not type the line numbers on the left. In Terminal run the file by typing: python ex1.py If you did it right then you should see the same output as I in the What You Should See section of this exercise. Ben Breech babreech@gmail.com 1. Introduction (Still a work in progress. I haven't even proofread the thing yet...) This is just some thoughts I wrote down concerning my experiences combining physics and computer science and also some advice for those looking to do the same. 1.1 Why should I care about your opinions? Well, that's always a good question to ask when reading somebody else's opinion. My rather ambitious (and perhaps insane) academic program made no real attempt at combining both programs in the sense of skipping a few courses or requirements here and there.

I've divided the sections up into undergraduate and graduate life as that seemed a rather fitting division to make. 2. 2.1 Do I really want to do this? Yet another astute question to ask. So, brave knights, if you do doubt your courage, or your strength, come no further... -- Tim the Enchanter from Monty Python and the Holy Grail The quote may be humorous but the point is very serious. Good! 2.2.1 I'm a physicist 3. 4. LaTeX:Commands. From AoPSWiki This page introduces various useful commands for rendering math in LaTeX, as well as instructions for building your own commands.

Math Commands Here are some commonly used math commands in LaTeX. Exponents and Subscripts Make exponents in LaTeX with ^ and subscripts with _ as shown in the examples below. Notice that we can apply both a subscript and an exponent at the same time, and that we can use {} to tell LaTeX what to apply a subscript or exponent to (compare the examples on the bottom row). Finally, notice that we use {} for any exponent or subscript that is more than one character. Or when you really want Fractions Most fractions look better in display mode (remember, you don't need the declaration if you are in \[...\] or $$...$$ mode.)

Use \cfrac for continued fractions: Radicals Sums, Products, Limits and Logarithms We use _ to get the 'bottom' parts of summations, products, and limits, as well as the subscripts of logarithms. Some of these are prettier in display mode: Mods. Physics Undergraduate Research Scholars. W3Schools Online Web Tutorials. Theoretical Astrophysics Center. Scirus - for scientific information. Physics addresses the material universe at its most fundamental levels. The laws revealed by careful study and experiment should apply from subatomic to cosmological scales.

With currently-understood physical law and mathematics as a foundation, the goals of physics are to push to still deeper levels of understanding and to push upward, extending our understanding to more complicated systems: molecules, fluids, solids, galaxies, living things. Concentrating in physics at Princeton will not only teach you about the structure of physical law, but it will allow you to take part in its discovery. Along the way you will learn to "think like a physicist" -- a hard-to-describe skill combining practiced intuition, the scientific method, and a knack for approximation -- and you will develop powerful, broadly-applicable problem-solving skills. Physics majors are prepared not only for a career in physics, but many other fields as well. URAP: Physical Sciences. RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) | Internship database.
