Future Cities - About Us

We're one of seven ‘Catapults' launched by Innovate UK. The aim for each of them is to become a world-leading innovation centre in its own specialist area. As you can guess by the name, our Catapult is all about urban innovation. In particular, we're focused squarely on the challenge of urban integration: how cities can take a more joined-up approach to the way they plan and operate. To improve quality of life, strengthen their economy and protect the environment. What we do Based in the heart of London, our role is to get people working together to solve real challenges faced by real cities right now.

Cities sharing what's worked for them in the past. We're making London the place to come for cities that need help with urban innovation. How will we do it? Our vision is a world where every city has the products, services and expertise it needs to integrate its systems and future-proof itself for the benefit of its citizens, economy and environment. Conflict Resolution and Negotiation Across Cultures

After recently losing an important deal in India, a business negotiator learned that her counterpart felt as if she had been rushing through the talks. The business negotiator thought she was being efficient with their time. How can she improve her cross-cultural negotiation skills? Research shows that dealmaking across cultures tends to lead to worse outcomes as compared with negotiations conducted within the same culture. Cultural misunderstandings tend to occur for two main reasons. First, when confronting cultural differences, we tend to rely on stereotypes. Instead of relying on stereotypes, try to focus on prototypes—cultural averages on dimensions of behavior or values. Land Matters for Conflict Resolution. Conflict Prevention.

Natural resources often play a role in fuelling conflicts, undermining peacebuilding efforts and contributing to a relapse in conflict if they are not properly managed.

Conflict Prevention

Indeed, over the past 60 years, at least 40% of internal conflicts had a link to natural resources and since 1990 there have been at least 18 violent conflicts fuelled by the exploitation of natural resources. It is also the case that conflicts with a natural resource link are more likely to relapse within five years of a peace agreement. The recognition that natural resources and environmental issues can contribute to violent conflict underscores their potential significance as pathways for stabilization, cooperation, and the consolidation of peace in war-torn societies. Natural resources and the environment can contribute to peacebuilding through economic development and sustainable livelihoods, while cooperation over their management provides new opportunities for dialogue and reconciliation between divided groups.
