How to Make Chinese Sky Lanterns

I gotta admit, I've seen sky lanterns around for several years. I've seen 'em advertised right here by Skylighter. Have seen them at displays and club events. But, honestly I never gave them much thought, and I wasn't much tempted to buy any. But, then I saw the latest Skylighter ad for them, and I thought, "I wonder how sky lanterns are made. " So, I had Harry send some of the flying lanterns to me. I enjoyed finding out how to light the paper lantern, and how to let it inflate and launch it.

My son and his family came over last Sunday, and I knew I just had to demonstrate these new toys for my grandsons. How to Make Fabrics Flame Retardant. A flame-retardant solution makes material resistant to burning when it encounters a low-energy ignition source, such as a cigarette lighter.

Textile manufacturers add certain chemical compounds to create flame-retardant fabrics, but you can turn any fabric into a flame-resistant material with simple household ingredients. This solution can be applied to clothing, bedding, upholstered furniture or vehicle interiors, as long as it's alright to get the fabric wet. You can find the step-by-step tutorial here:Step 1: Make Paper Balloon The paper balloon is made using rice papers, butter paper, kite paper or tracing paper. Butter paper works best as it has good tensile strength which prevents the paper from tearing and is easy to handle. While sticking the sides of the butter paper make sure you stick it properly so that the hot air could not escape from it.Step 2: Making the rim of the balloon The open end of the balloon is stuck with a bamboo ring to attache the fuel.

Origami Cube Cakes. High Voltage, Wood and Resin Result in Fractal Art. Wood burning, which goes by pyrography when it’s feeling fancy, has been an art form for centuries.

High Voltage, Wood and Resin Result in Fractal Art

[PapaJ06] puts a new twist on it by using a microwave oven transformer to generate fractal patterns in wood. We’ve seen these Lichtenberg figures before, but generally as electric discharges in acrylic sheets or crystal balls using multi-mega-electron volt accelerators. [PapaJ06]’s technique is considerably simpler and well within the reach of most would-be fractal artists, relying as it does on a transformer salvaged from a $20 Craigslist microwave. But the extra twist that really brings the wow factor to the fractal patterns burned into the wood is the addition of some phosphorescent resin to fill the valleys carved by the electric discharge. [PapaJ06] carefully prepares the wood, fills the burns with glow powder mixed with epoxy resin, and finishes with a little sanding, linseed oil and polyurethane.

Fractal Lichtenberg Figure Wood Burning with Electricity. Using high voltage electricity to burn Lichtenberg figures, sometimes called fractal patterns, in wood is an unusual and interesting hobby that's easy to do and amazes everyone who sees it.

This page provides all the information needed to get started. Connect two high voltage wires to a piece of wood, paint it with a little salt solution, turn on the power and anyone can create images like the following: While it sounds simple, the fact is that there are many interrelated variables that can make getting consistent results frustrating. What power supply works best? Which wood produces the best results? Fortunately, this page provides answers to all those questions, so let's get started! Power Supply: The two most common power supplies used for burning Lichtenberg figures into wood are neon sign transformers and microwave oven transformers. On the left is a 12,000 volt neon sign transformer and on the right a 2,000 volt microwave oven transformer. 1. 2. 3. 4. Burn Fractal Patterns into Plywood – DIY Art. Video Player Error loading this resource The Backyard Scientist (who you may remember pouring molten aluminum into a watermelon) has a very cool how-to for burning Lichtenberg fractal patterns into pieces of plywood using electricity.

Burn Fractal Patterns into Plywood – DIY Art

Not only is the process mesmerizing (as you can see above), but the resulting patterns are beautiful. Two microwave oven transformers in parallel provide the 2,000V applied to opposite corners of the 5mm plywood. A mixture of baking soda and water spread across the wood’s surface allows for better conductivity. This project is potentially very dangerous, so don’t try this without doing proper research and taking the proper safety precautions.
