It bothers me a little when conservatives call Barack Obama a “socialist.”
He certainly is an enemy of the free market, and wants politicians and bureaucrats to make the fundamental decisions about the economy. But that does not mean that he wants government ownership of the means of production, which has long been a standard definition of socialism. What President Obama has been pushing for, and moving toward, is more insidious: government control of the economy, while leaving ownership in private hands. The rich do not pay the most taxes, they pay ALL the taxes. "For most income groups, average federal tax rates in 2010 were near the lowest rates for the 1979-2010 period," reads the report.

As Americans navigated the labyrinthine tax code ahead of tax day, many felt the sting of the President’s myriad tax increases. Despite calls for more taxes on the rich, the Heritage chart shown above reveals that the recent tax increases disproportionately affect the working wealthy. The top 10 percent of all income earners paid 71 percent of federal income taxes in 2010, yet they earned 45 percent of all federal income. Compare that to the bottom 50 percent of earners, who earn 12 percent of income yet pay only 2 percent of federal income taxes. So when Obama and advocates of higher federal taxes opine that the rich do not pay their “fair share,” they are correct—affluent income-earners pay a whole lot more than they would pay if we had a proportional tax code instead of the highly progressive one we have today. House Republican leaders craft their vision for an alternative to health-care law. The tenets of the plan — which could expand to include the ability to buy insurance across state lines, guaranteed renewability of policies and changes to medical-malpractice regulations — are ideas that various conservatives have for a long time backed as part of broader bills.
Republicans Release Their Own Health Care System Reform Bill. House Republicans unveiled their 219-page health care overhaul legislation Tuesday night.
The GOP asserts it would lower health care premiums for families and small businesses and that it would be a far less costly and intrusive approach to helping the uninsured than the Democratic proposals in the House and Senate. It is not expected to garner enough support to pass. The bill's general approach expands state-based high-risk insurance pools for Americans with pre-existing health problems, permits trade associations to organize to purchase group insurance, imposes caps on medical liability lawsuits and allows health insurance companies to sell policies across state lines.
Most of these ideas -- particularly efforts to reform medical malpractice laws -- were left out of the Democratic approaches. The GOP plan would also explicitly prohibit all federal funds from being used to pay for abortions. Below is the Republican legislation: Democrat Gives Up Single-Payer Measure to Back Party Leaders.
