Soy and Pepper: Yaki udon with beef

If you marinate the beef the night before or in the morning (which improves the flavour anyway), everything comes together and onto the table really quickly less than half an hour. This dish makes full use of the quickness of wok cooking. The shape of a wok also facilitates the stirring and mixing of ingredients (especially leafy vegetables) without having accidental 'extras' on your stove top. I recently collaborated with Julia at A Slice of Cherry Pie, who came up with the great idea of a post with tips on wok cooking and maintenance, and thought this post would complement hers well.

They jump and spin around me like mini tornadoes, hugging and kissing me like there’s no tomorrow, all because I made them spaghetti pie. I’m kind of afraid they are going to find out just how simple this meal is and decide the hugs and kisses should be reserved for more time-intensive family favorites, but for now, I’ll take it. If you aren’t familiar with spaghetti pie, please acquaint yourself immediately! We’ve been eating it for years and years and like the title of this post indicates, it truly is a family favorite.

The reason I haven’t shared it with you yet (I know, I know, I feel a bit guilty) is because I’ve been spending the last five years on my life’s greatest work: perfecting spaghetti pie. The first time I attempted to cook fried rice on my own, I was a teenager and my parents and little brother were on vacation. I stayed home to attend summer school and to enjoy a little freedom living on my own for a couple of weeks. Since my Mom was the queen in the kitchen, I didn’t really cook too much back then. During the entire 6 days surrounding my wedding, I deferred to my mother to tell me what to eat to please the Gods of good fortune and fertility. Oh, did I want to have some grapes? My wedding with Scott was a nice blend of his culture (Scottish-German) and mine. One custom that we opted out of was serving a whole roast suckling pig at the wedding banquet. There is one tradition that I would like to share with you, eating noodles. So, I created one easy dish that covered all your important bases – sort of cramming in as much good fortune as possible on one plate.
