'Banks must invest in low-cost housing' Kwadlangezwa - Banks should be forced to invest in low-cost housing, SA Communist Party (SACP) general secretary Blade Nzimande said on Thursday. The state should move from merely regulating to actively directing the private sector, he told delegates at the party's elective conference near Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal. Delivering his political report, Nzimande said the state had to direct the private sector towards developmental outcomes and objectives. "Legislation must be made to force South African banks to invest in low-cost housing. It is after all the money of the working class. " Earlier, outgoing SA Communist Party chairperson Gwede Mantashe urged party members to join the African National Congress. "Our ability to influence and advance our agenda will be determined by our immersion in the structures and programmes of our alliance partners," he said. "The reality facing the party today... is that of communists who are not even members of the ANC.

" DA march turns violent. Blood in the water: ANCYL sharks circle drowning Malema - Opinion. The kingmakers within the ANC Youth League’s national executive committee (NEC) face a tough decision, one that will have lasting implications on the outcome of the ANC’s elective conference in Mangaung in December. Do they cut the political umbilical cord joining their embattled president Julius Malema to the youth league he has led since 2008 and thus isolate and effectively exile him, or do they defy the mother body and rally behind him by rejecting the immediate, temporary suspension from the ANC and its youth league and allow him to attend meetings and gathering of the young lions?

But while the youth league finds itself between that rock and a political hard place, there are other important political matters at hand—the question of who to back in the the ANC’s leadership succession battle. While the youth league’s answer to that question had been considered final, recent developments suggest the matter is no longer as cut and dry as it was only a few weeks ago. We have achieved, but can do more. As government, we would like to introduce our own new and exciting rhythm for the faithful report-card followers A balanced beat that does not just focus on the personalities in government who supposedly scored an “A” for achievement or an “F” for failure, but rather on the programmes and actual performance of government as a whole. We are ending the year on a high note after successfully hosting COP17 in Durban, which boosted our international exposure and showed we do not shy away from providing leadership on a range of issues to facilitate global dialogue towards commendable resolutions. It’s President Jacob Zuma’s leadership that set the tone for such achievement throughout the year, starting with the State of the Nation Address, which laid out bold steps for government commitments both at home and abroad. This year, as the world’s economy continued to struggle and we felt the impact in our country, government persisted with its efforts to create jobs.

The ANC has become a monster. Goodbye yesterday. Goodbye memories. I miss the African National Congress (ANC). I miss its old values. Tuesday, November 22 2011, changed everything. We have entered a new but familiar terrain. It is a point of no return for the ANC. The ANC of old is dead. The old ANC would never have gone against public outcry. I waited for Trevor Manuel, Cyril Ramaphosa, Bobby Godsell and other commissioners from the National Planning Commission to bring sanity and words of wisdom to the debate. Their silence was too loud. It's comforting to hear business people like Gareth Ackerman siding with the constitution. To those who stood outside the Parliament gates, you didn't lose. You didn't lose, my friends. Zuma says youth employment should be at the centre of the global development goal agenda in the conference(SABC) There is massive youth unemployment in most countries on the African continent, according to the 12th African Regional Meeting of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). ILO Director of Employment Policy Development Azita Berar says the problem is serious, given that more than two thirds of people in Africa are below the age of 25 years. "What are the rates? I think the real stories behind statistics are more telling. But, we really have high open unemployment rates of some 20 to 35% across the countries. "Youths have a higher share of the working poverty. Typically the youth unemployment rate is twice as much of adults. South Africa's President Jacob Zuma yesterday called on the Labour Minister and practitioners to play a positive role in the fight against unemployment and other social ills confronting the labour markets.

ANC says DA guilty of 'apartheid dirty tricks' The ANC will lay charges against the Democratic Alliance on Tuesday after a pamphlet was distributed quoting Trevor Manuel urging South Africans not to vote for the ANC. “Not only does this kind of dirty campaigning go against the letter and spirit of the electoral law, but it is also deliberately designed to defame the good character of comrade Manuel,” ANC treasurer general Mathews Phosa said in Johannesburg.

“Clearly, the DA has lost any sense of wrong and right in this election.” According to the pamphlet allegedly being distributed by the DA, Manuel tells South Africans not to vote for the ANC. The pamphlet quotes him as saying that the ANC is “unaccountable, racist, corrupt and a party that has failed to deliver to the poor”. Manuel is an ANC national executive committee member and is a minister in the presidency. “This pamphlet is defamatory and libellous and has all the hallmarks of apartheid’s CCB dirty tricks,” said Phosa. Anc-da-clash-at-easter-march-1. A church’s Easter weekend march to highlight the plight of township residents turned into a confrontation between DA and ANC supporters on Saturday, leading to the burning of a DA T-shirt and posters.

ANC supporters accused the DA of hijacking the march by handing out party T-shirts during the 13.5km march along Lansdowne Road from Gugulethu to Khayelitsha’s Site B. When ANC supporters sang struggle songs, DA members retaliated by singing their own. “This is unnecessary, they came to hijack the march,” said one ANC supporter. “What have they done for us in the townships while they are ruling the city?” Pastor Xola Skosana of the Way of Life Church, who managed to defuse tensions, said the DA members had been ill advised to wear party T-shirts at a religious march.

“It only provoked people along the route,” he said. He said the idea had been to mark the Easter weekend with a march to show people that the church was highlighting the plight of township residents. Field-mouse-makes-for-zille-s-jeans-1. Independent Newspapers DA leader Helen Zille. Photo: Independent Newspapers A field mouse up her jeans was the last thing DA leader Helen Zille expected when she went on a campaign walkabout in Seshego, the home town of ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema.

The mouse rushed across Zille’s blue sneakers and scampered up her leg while the Western Cape premier was in the township in Polokwane, surrounded by about 200 supporters on Thursday. As there was no private place for her to take off her jeans, Zille had to go about her business as if nothing was amiss. “I tried to catch it from outside my jeans, but couldn’t. Only when her car got her back to Polokwane did Zille have a chance to slip into a toilet cubicle for some privacy.

Zille said she managed to save the mouse with the help of the DA’s acting provincial director, Lindy Wilson, who freed it in the garden. “It gave me a little nip in my groin when I tried to catch it, but that’s all,” she said. #zaPolitics in today's Cape Times - Pres Zuma says ANC i. The people rate local government - In The Paper. In the run-up to the local government elections on May 18, the Institute for Democracy in Africa (Idasa) conducted an extensive citizen-satisfaction survey of 2 375 adult South African citizens in 21 municipalities in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and North West, which was financed by the Canadian International Development Agency. The participating municipalities were small or medium-sized in terms of population and have a predominantly rural character, which means that they are not necessarily a cross-section of all municipalities. They were selected by the provincial governments and included a mix of well and poorly performing municipalities. The purpose of the survey was to solicit the opinions of ordinary citizens of the performance of their local government during the past four years. The Mail & Guardian will publish the survey results, focusing on all aspects of local service delivery and governance, in the coming weeks.
