She’s now in South Africa writing a series of blogs about AIDS, and recently wrote an entire post about mothers2mothers. Jarrett shares Dr. Mitch Besser’s story of founding the organization, and met with Maletsatsi Mbayi, an HIV-positive woman who works for mothers2mothers and shares her journey of life after diagnosis. An excerpt from The Global Post: “But it is clear that working for Mothers2Mothers has empowered Mbayi, who now stands strong and confident, and is noticeably pained when she remembers her darkest hours, when she thought that taking her own life was the only way forward. Her knowledge and her dedication to helping other HIV positive women signify how far she has come. I wondered, If my mother had lived, would she also have helped support other HIV-positive mothers?

In the beginning of this year, I was approached by a new startup company in Cape Town to offer prepaid electricity services to followers @capetown. From the onset, myPrepaid made an impression and I decided to register my own meter to purchase electricity online via EFT. I wanted to test the system before recommending it, and maybe agreeing to endorse the service as a #capeHero (the tag used for supporting sponsors or affiliated businesses to the @capetown and @joziZA Twitter accounts). It was one of the best decisions I ever made. No more rush to the local store to get prepaid electricity. I registered myself, then added them as beneficiary and transferred funds via EFT to the myPrepaid account.

I received the token immediately. “We live in Cape Town. It has always been a bit of pain to buy prepaid electricity and yes, there are other solutions (you are welcome to mention them in comments) but I am glad I opted into myPrepaid and tested the service several times. Like this: Generation of the hipster « Yumnatarian. In the good days, hipsters didn’t like to be called hipsters. They resented labels and had the kind of ‘I-don’t-like-things-that-other-people-like’ attitude. Today, it seems some of them sort of enjoy the label. They’re the ‘anti-mainstream’ people who look a bit like vagabonds, I know you’ve seen them roaming the streets of Kloof and Greenmarket Square. Hipsters are in fact, the new hot thing.

What do you mean you don’t own a V-neck collar T-shirt? Don’t you know that hipsters are so hot right now? I don’t care how small your face is, get a pair of large-rimmed glasses and rock them everyday! The Front Street Boys (Back Street’s too mainstream) Three Types Of Hipsters Fashionable Hipsters The guys are mainly rocking cotton V-necks, pants rolled showing their ankles, a pair of old looking loafers and have scruffy facial hair that really just works. Wanna- be Hipsters They go out of their way to look ‘hipster’ and spend a lot of money on clothes that look vintage or cheap. Original Hipsters. Ke float cupcakes | Add to Taste. If you had to describe coca cola what words would come to mind? Dark, bubbly, sweet? That description could easily match Nerine *ducking to avoid flying shoe* and so when she asked for that flavour of cupcakes for the launch of Inkarna I reckoned it would be a perfect match. Over a chocolate martini and juice that was actually water we discussed ideas and “coke float” was the winner.

Who hasn’t had a coke float at least once in their sticky youth (if you haven’t I suggest you pony up and regress slightly and try one) Mess and sweetness, what more could a child want. Well how do I recreate that in a cupcake. I took to the internet to find if others had done it and found Brown Eyed Baker did something very similar. The solution was really simple and the result, magical. To kick off, we have Stacey Rehbock’s experience from last night’s Moonlightmass cycle through Cape Town: #Moonlightmass 7.0 – A triathlete’s perspective Last night I braved the chilly Cape Town weather to attend my first #Moonlightmass cycle around the Cape Town CBD. After having seen talk of it on twitter and through friends, I knew this was something I wanted to get involved in. With the Tour de France currently in its first week, many hours have been spent watching these top cyclists weave through France and Belgium at phenomenal speeds.

Watching the TDF only makes you want to jump on your bike and go for a ride. Being a triathlete (or wannabe triathlete), we are so used to seeing lycra, tri suits, TT bikes, tri bars and a multitude of equipment that says speed . Stacey in the middle! One that just takes you back in time and suddenly you’re sitting on your bed with one of your parents reading a story to you? For me this book has become a very vague and distant memory, but what I can tell you is that it was Afrikaans (I know right, what were my parents thinking?!) And about a little girl that was walking home with a plaster on her knee. Every time someone would stop her and ask her how it happened she would make up a new story. At least I think that’s what it was about. In our house at the moment we have 2 very special books that get read so often that they are looking rather crumpled and tattered, but very much loved.

The first is about Cardwell the Giraffe that managed to get his neck in a knot because he was so into eating the leaves off a tree. The next is “Big Sister, Little Sister” and it’s about how the little sister (Riya) copies everything the big sister (Kyla) does. If you want to you can share this with your friends: The Weird One... Rugby – rough and rugged is how it’s played on the surface. To the extent that one wonders how the sport could contain rules as complex as an IT geek’s latest coding conundrum.

I mean, even a certain Bryce Lawrence has trouble understanding it (still not over that). I suppose this is what makes it such an intriguing game, the finely intertwined combo of intense physicality with delicate precision, both key requirements in executing victories on the field of play. You can’t be physical without precision, and expect to win, which is mostly what it’s all about. Getting back to how it’s played on the surface then. Before Saturday, most of the many mediums of communication available to us were littered with expressions of disappointment in the “brand” of Rugby on show from the Newlands based winter weather men.

On that note, as far as the mostly Stormerless Springbok squad is concerned, one cannot ignore the coach’s track record. So where you going first? | going homeless. This has been the the most asked question when I speak to people about my plans for the going homeless project, followed by proclamations of jealousy. Well I figured I’d start at the southern tip of Africa. Cape Agulhus. It just seems like the right place to start my journey. But that’s only part of the reason. My family has been trooping off to the Breede river since I can remember remembering my childhood, and about half way there, the turn off to Agulhus has flown by as we made our way to the river for school holidays. I have always wondered what’s at the end of that right turn off the N2. Its time to find out … Cape Agulhas Cape Agulhas is the southernmost point in the continent of Africa. Just One Naartjie | The Jolly Jammer.

I was at Spar the other day. I bought a paper bag full of biltong, a bottle of milk and a bag of naartjies. On the way across the parking lot to my car, holding my purchases in my arms, I was approached by a young boy, begging. I brushed him off. Irritated. Then he said to me, “Please missus, I’m hungry. I gave him a naartjie and one each for his brothers who were lurking nearby, looking wary. That bag of naartjies had cost me R3.99. I bought three more bags, one for each of the brothers, and a loaf of fresh bread. I’ve heard all the arguments. We live in a cruel world. Giving a child a naartjie made almost no difference to my day. Random acts of kindness. I arrived at the V & A Waterfront around lunch time, when I was meant to be there at only 6pm to watch The Graeme Watkins Project. Even though I arrived very early before 6pm (It must have been 02:30pm). I went with my friend, Monica and her mom, Mary-Anne to the Waterfront. We walked to the amphitheatre, only to notice it was quite packed with people. We found a spot right in front by the stage. Monica and I went into the Waterfront mall. After McDonald's, we went to Pick 'n Pay, only then did I buy a Cornetto ice-cream.

After Pick 'n Pay, we went to Melissa's shop. After all that, we went back to the amphitheatre and sat there for a while. it was still quite a bit of time left before The Graeme Watkins Project performed. After sitting, Monica and I went to the monument that is made out of Coca-Cola crates and both its fingers have a peace sign showing. After taking pictures and laughing as we took them, we went back to the amphitheatre. Thank you everyone who read this Blog! Billboard Music Awards 2012 | Reserved Lifestyle and Entertainment. Introduction to Fado music « stuff ani likes. My roots are Portuguese, but I’ve only recently discovered and fallen in love with fado music. Fado music has a long history in Portuguese culture but the the exact origins of the musical genre are unclear. There is a brief history and some theories at Fado.com and on Wikipedia but there is only one word that truly encapsulates the music: “saudade“. It’s an almost impossible word to define as it can only really be experienced but Wikipedia comes close: Saudade has been described as a “vague and constant desire for something that does not and probably cannot exist…” It’s about loss and desire, but all mixed up into one feeling.

The “Queen of Fado” was Amália Rodrigues. Another style of fado is the Coimbra fado. A more modern and popular fadista is Mariza. And, finally, I’d like to introduce you to Dulce Pontes. So that’s my quick introduction to fado music. ~ani Like this: Like Loading... The painting of President Zuma « www.inside-politics.org. We have also detected that this distasteful and vulgar portrait of the President has been displayed on a weekend newspaper and its website, we again have instructed our lawyers to request the said newspaper to remove the portrait from their website.” Well, in support of the constitutional right to free expression and in opposition to the ANC’s tyrannical attitude, here is the painting in question. Onion & Anchovy Beer Bread with Biltong Dip This post forms part of the series of recipes I am preparing for Mediterranean Delicacies. In this case, their anchovies with their biltong dip. I combined the salty anchovies with onion to make a deeply savoury beer bread and served thick slices of it with the creamy biltong dip. It’s really fitting I think, to post these recipes right now, as Medi Deli foods have a predominately Greek origin and I am currently in Greece, enjoying not only the warm Greek hospitality but the range of foods and flavors too. Sharing food meze or tapas style has always been a favourite; I feel particularly privileged to share the classics here in the country of origin.

The sun had called it a night a while ago. Its last rays had painted the café in fiery orange hues as the last of summer slipped away. As the cold winter night swept to fill the void between sunset and twilight, we were still sitting at our table. None of us wanted to leave. This was a fortuitous moment, one of those rare moments of magic where you look up to the heavens and mouth a silent “thank you.” The whole day had been like this; small passages of time where I was so surprised by the easiness of her company I was in danger of having a permanent look of pleasure fixed on my face.

We had exchanged some polite conversation for a while and then prepared to attend to our separate social commitments. I fully expected our meeting to come to naught; through personal experience I have learned that promises of tea and company usually come with an unhealthy supply of one and not the other. Three days later, my BlackBerry vibrated as a message came through. It was her.
