An inventory of students' learning styles can build self-esteem by helping them discover their strengths; learn about areas in which they might need to make more effort; and appreciate the differences among themselves. Understanding Learning Styles Most people use a combination of learning styles but have a clear preference for just one. Understanding your child’s learning style can make it easier for you to communicate with your child and can help reduce frustration at homework time. If your child selected mostly auditory learning statements, he is good at absorbing information from spoken words and may understand instructions better if they are read aloud. If she chose mostly kinesthetic learning statements, she prefers to be active while studying and may not be able to focus while sitting still. If your child picked mostly visual learning statements, he benefits from seeing information on a chalkboard or in an illustration and may grow impatient listening for long periods of time.
