The enormous variety in marine habitats and types of dive sites has made Florida one of the most popular dive destinations for divers around the world for decades. The only natural living coral reef in North America is found offshore of South Florida and the Florida Keys. The state also offers opportunities for shore-entry dives, wreck dives, spear fishing, lobstering, treasure hunting, and snorkeling. Divers can even explore caves and caverns in freshwater springs and lakes. The northern section of the state is known as the Panhandle. There are no shore-entry dives in this region, but some interesting wreck dives lie offshore of Pensacola.

A bit further south is Crystal River which is a popular winter home for manatees. While there are no coral reefs in this region there are two nice spots for beach diving. The eastern shores of Florida are known as the Atlantic coast. Scuba Quest Florida Dive Centers. Florida Trip Reports. Fossil Diving at Venice Beach FL for Megalodon and Mammoth. Commonly referred to as the shark tooth capital of the world, Venice Beach boasts a plethora of miocene aged shark teeth from the Bone Valley formation. Also found there are numerous pleistocene ice age fossils. I usually take at least one long distance fossil hunting trip a year, and when da fossz, t$, and scubapaul said they would be down for a trip to Venice, we contacted rivrdigr and started making plans. The past few years he has come to SC, a trip we've named RivrDigrFest. This year, we are bringing the fest to the digr. Day 1: We met up with rivrdigr bright and early. Inshore, the viso was terrible. Day 2: Same time, same spot, same conditions. Day 3: Today was Fathers day, so rivrdigr was not with us. Day 4: Return of the digr - After hearing of our stupendous paleo feats the previous day, Rivrdigr and his son, who has not yet taken upon himself a paleo name, took us back to the same spot.

Minutes into the dive, the sandy ocean bottom, engulfed with whelks, sand dollars and sea urchins transforms into a much darker, denser, and less inviting ground. That makes me smile, because I know I’ve hit what’s called “black sand”—the combination of millions of ground fragments of fossils such as turtle shells, stingray barbs and dugong bones, giving the appearance of a dark, silty surface.

I know the big prize is nearby. Then, suddenly it takes shape and appears before my eyes—a four-inch shark’s tooth, resting gently atop the sea bed, with serrated edges outlining its smooth, jet black surface. But it’s not just any shark tooth. Today, hundreds of eager divers from beginners to experts flock to Venice Fla., 60 miles south of Tampa, in search of their very own “meg” tooth.
