Nota Bene: The Spirit vs. the Letter: Biblicalism and Conscience

In this battle are two sides: one which maintains and asserts a literal, straightforward reading of the Bible to maintain its position; the other which argues that its side is supported by the spirit, even if sometimes not the letter, of the Bible. If what comes to mind is America's continuing culture wars over gender and sexuality, and specifically same-sex relationships and how the law and the church should approach them, my guess is you're not alone.

According to public polling, the issue of acceptance for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals is trending toward inclusion, and many mainline Protestant denominations are reflecting this movement. But we needn't go too far back in the country's history for a strikingly parallel issue that likewise divided the nation and its churchgoers: that of slavery. Sound familiar? After we landed, I hailed a cab. This not being New York City, where I am from, there was no cab line, no wait and no time to look at the car I was jumping into. As soon as I was in the cab however, I noticed that pretty much every surface of the car's interior was covered with a JESUS LOVES YOU sticker, that there was a crucifix mounted on the dashboard and there were even little green pocket bibles hanging on strings at the point where the windshield meets the frame of the car. This wasn't just a cab, it was a rolling cathedral! Part of me thought I should just jump out of the car, but we were already pulling away from the curb and I didn't want to cause any trouble or cost the driver his fare.

As he pulled out of the airport, the cabdriver, a middle-aged man with a scraggly beard, long greasy blond hair and wearing a red checkered shirt, cut off at the sleeves, was checking me out in the rearview mirror. I hesitated. BuzzDixon.com - The personal blog of writer Buzz Dixon. "His manner is frivolous because he is an Italian; but he means what he says." Would Jesus Discriminate? - Jesus affirmed a gay couple. The Greek word that the Roman centurion uses in this passage to describe the sick man – pais – is the same word used in ancient Greek to refer to a same-gender partner.

Listen to a sermon on this topic: Download Discussion: Matthew 19:10-12 From our days in Sunday school, many of us are familiar with the Gospel story where Jesus healed the servant of a Roman centurion. This story is recorded in Matthew 8:5-13 and Luke 7:1-10. Just another miracle story, right? Note 18. Opinion Do Not Give Up on Christian Gays. When I left home in the fall of 2008 and started school at Harvard, I was amazed at how much openness and support there was for LGBT students on campus, mainly because it was worlds apart from the conservative Christian church in Kansas that I’d come from.

Opinion Do Not Give Up on Christian Gays

Back home, gay issues were never discussed, every family and every wedding was heterosexual, and the few people who eventually came out waited until they had moved far away. The message was largely unspoken, yet crystal clear: If you don’t fit into a heterosexual identity, you aren’t welcome. None of this was because church is unwelcoming in general. Everyone was welcomed on the same terms — being willing to repent from sin. Those who wouldn’t repent but wanted acceptance anyway were asking for special treatment. Sadly, for LGBT kids in these communities, things are not getting better. The trouble is, the best candidates for reforming these churches — the LGBT Christians who are in them — remain isolated and voiceless. Kenworth Reeves, Jr.
