Part of the reason is because there were several different Imagineers working on the ride, all wanting to add their own element. If you’re anything like us, then no trip to Disneyland (or Disney World) is complete without at least one visit to the Haunted Mansion. The Mansion’s 999 happy haunts have been scaring and delighting park guests since 1969. If you’ve always wanted to take a peek behind the scenes of this classic ride, these 10 terrifying facts are sure to fill you with ghoulish delight. Read on…if you dare! History and the Haunted Mansion

Just when I think I've written or seen or read or heard everything there is to write / see / read about the Haunted Mansion, new stuff crops up. This seems sort of impossible - I wish new information about, say, Country Bear Jamboree or Tom Sawyer Island cropped up every few months - but suffice to say my brain has gone back to mulling over that dusty old house on the hill. Much like the ride itself, what follows will be a little here, a little there - all over the place really. But the Spooky House still fascinates and amazes while the luster of other attractions rubs thin, and every time I think I've brilliantly laid the old gal down to rest with my incisive observations she comes rocketing back up like a spooky rubber mask on a pneumatic lift. It's a welcome if inevitable return. ding in 1879.

The Haunted Mansion Like You've Never Seen It [Part 2]

Marc Davis designed this part of the ballroom to feature various ghosts entering the party from a coffin and hearse outside the mansion. See Part 1 here. We go behind the scenes to see some of the process. Some ghost figures in these photos have their paint, clothing, props, and/or hair stripped off. You’ll notice these figures are mounted to a carousel-like structure.

This ship captain (not found in Marc’s concept) has a famous counterpart in Pirates of the Caribbean... the auctioneer! Legendary Disney sculptor Blaine Gibson sculpted a number of human heads for Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Carousel of Progress, Hall of Presidents, etc. This fella can also be seen in the graveyard scene. My oh my. Nearby grandmother reads a book in her rocking chair. Look familiar?? A few of the ghost figures above got their start in this Marc Davis concept art. Did you know that crews were once too frightened to clean parts of the Haunted Mansion? Opened to guests on August 12, 1969, the Haunted Mansion was envisioned by Walt Disney and his “Imagineers” even before the park’s opening in 1955. They originally planned a crooked street leading away from the Disneyland Main Street, beyond a carnival, past a peaceful church and graveyard, to a ruined old mansion.
