Suzy Menkes: The Fashion Life Scientific. 07 October 2014 Suzy Menkes Paris Fashion Week went further than unexpected cuts and fabrics. Science now plays its part with forward-thinking designers - and is changing the face of fashion with experimental materials and extraordinary examples of clothes that go from the laboratory to the wardrobe. Iris van Herpen: Magnetic Motion I was mesmerised by the feet, where shoes looked like a wild and wispy growth of seaweed. The "growth" word was accurate. For Iris van Herpen told me backstage, on the top level of the Pompidou Centre, with its sweeping vista of Paris, that those stringy shoes were going to grow as the models walked the runway. Magnetic Motion is the title that this designer, steeped in scientific knowledge, called her collection - the first since she was awarded the French Andam prize, an annual event that had previously discovered Martin Margiela and design duo Viktor & Rolf.
Van Herpen's skill has been to turn scientific explorations into the reality of wearable clothing. Olivia Palermo Loves Pinterest - NYFW Spring 2015. Thanks to a new collaboration Palermo is doing with Pinterest, we may be in luck. Beginning today, users will be able to follow Palermo’s fashion month through various boards, all aimed at making fashion week a little more accessible. “Runway fashion gives us inspiration for what’s new and possible when it comes to creating our own individual styles,” Palermo says.
“Pinning is a great way to visualize your take on runway looks. We caught up with Palermo at the Soho Grand Hotel in between shows to find out all about how she uses Pinterest and what goes into making the perfect board. A picture is worth a thousand words—but for these models, a picture, or rather a “casting Polaroid,” can be worth a memorable career of many years. Typically taken when a model has their first meeting with a magazine, the casting Polaroid serves as a reference point (hairstyles, new piercings, etc.) and an initial test. Later, the snapshot can be passed on to editors and photographers for consideration for shoots. Yet a model’s Polaroid runs deeper than looks—especially their first one.
“A Polaroid is an opportunity to connect with the model. It’s a test between photographer and model and an opportunity for the model to enchant,” says Vogue Bookings Director Helena Suric. “More information can be gleaned from the taking of the picture than simply what is left behind.” In other words, you only get one chance at a first impression—especially when that first impression is in physical form.

The lazy days of summer are drawing to a close, and as things start amping back up at work and school, it’s easy to get a little bit overwhelmed and very stressed out. No matter what your source of anxiety, these yoga moves will help you relax, refocus, and release some of that pent up tension. 1. Controlled Breathing This is a great way to start your practice. Sit in a seated, cross-legged position. Lengthen your spine as you inhale, and as you exhale place your hands on your knees, palms facing up.
Take a moment to think about the intention of your practice and relax into the seated position. On your next inhale, breathe in deeply to a slow count of four, but don’t exhale just yet. 2. Come onto your hands and knees, and on your next inhale, straighten your legs, so your body forms an inverted V. Relax into this posture, letting gravity release built up tension in your neck and the backs of your legs. 3. Up next: More yoga postures to release tension! Yoga for Happy Hips - Vega Community.
