Spring Cleaning Tips #4 & #5: Time to Freshen Things Up | Apartm.
Fresh spring air: take it outside and bring it inside. Our #4 tip involves taking your home items — like duvets, wool blankets, and rugs — outside to air them out, and our #5 tip involves ways to freshen your air inside. Jump below more:Bring It Out: At the end of a long winter, your duvets, blankets and rugs could probably use a good airing out. Green Clean Makeover: The Bathroom Cabinet | Apartment Therapy R. You know the situation. It's T-minus eighteen hours until your lease is up, and there's one cabinet door you have refused to open until the last possible moment. This is it: time to reckon with that bathroom cabinet, where you're sure to find half-empty bottles of lotion, cleaning agents, and probably an old toothbrush or three.
Here are a few tips to getting that particular netherworld whipped into shape. We find that underneath the bathroom sink is where most of our forgot-we-had-it or didn't-quite-like-it-enough-to-use-it-often products wind up. Whether it's that lotion we got in our stocking at Christmas, or the bottle of chemical-laden cleaner we bought three years ago, just before making a switch to all green cleaners. . . Chances are, there are many unused things under there.
So our first tip for cleaning? Whenever we're preparing for a move, or feel a spring cleaning purge coming on, we sit down on the floor and reach under the sink. Return to Origins Recycling Program. Previous image Next image Heather Watts has developed a wild and beautiful style drawn from natural and supernatural worlds. Her paintings are in a dreamlike vintage-inspired landscape complimented by gorgeous frames often made from reclaimed, distressed materials. When I think of velvet paintings I think of luminous orange Hawaiian sunsets and portraits of Elvis, and I imagine them in musty basement rec rooms near harvest gold appliances.
But Heather Watts has elevated velvet painting into a much finer medium. Her use of natural and supernatural imagery combined with carefully selected recycled and repurposed framing results in a very pleasing and original style. She draws inspiration from many places, including Pacific Northwest rainforests and South Pacific culture. Another significant part of Heather’s creative process is framing. Still living in the desert, still making recycled housing, which he's redubbed earthships. Turns out beer can architecture can sustain an entire career. Flashback to 1974, 3 years after Reynolds had published his thesis in Architectural Record and had begun experimenting with beer can buildings in the desert. It's pretty remarkable to look back to the 1970s and see Reynolds working out protoypical versions of green design that have become sustainable standards today, like green roofs and recycled insulation. In many ways, these experimental houses were ahead of their time. Name: Lanz Brooks with roommates Michael and BrentLocation: Hayes Valley, San FranciscoSize: 4,000 square feetYears lived in: Lanz for 4½ years (Michael since 1994) The home of roommates Lanz, Michael and Brent is one of those rare San Francisco apartments that actually predates the earthquake and fire of 1906 that nearly destroyed the entire city. Built in 1888, it has seen multiple iterations as a single family home, a boarding house and a "place for the gentleman caller to conduct their business" (as Michael so delicately puts it).
This Hayes Valley two floor apartment is now home to three roommates that look at the space as a continually evolving project. And with that much space, it's obvious that the projects will never end. (Since this home is so large and full of eye candy, there is another house tour showcasing the second half of the house found at Lanz, Michael and Brent's Evolving History House - Part II.) Name: Lanz Brooks with roommates Michael and BrentLocation: Hayes Valley, San FranciscoSize: 4,000 square feetYears lived in: Lanz for 4½ years (Michael since 1994) Last Thursday, we had a glimpse into half of Lanz, Michael and Brent's amazing Hayes Valley home with Part 1 of their House Tour. The first part focused on the first floor of their two story Hayes Valley apartment and many of the common areas.
Now, a look at the light filled second floor shows what makes this 1888 home truly stand out — its phenomenal skylights. (To see the first half of the House Tour, visit Lanz, Michael and Brent's Evolving History House - Part I.) Lanz's role as "head stylist" continues throughout the dining room, kitchen and sun room / laundry room. From the collection of chairs and wine boxes in the dining room to one of the cheeriest little laundry rooms we've encountered, the roommates continue to be resourceful in their quest to decorate their 4,000 square foot home.
