His books and stories have been bestsellers in Japan as well as internationally, with his work being translated into 50 languages[1] and selling millions of copies outside his native country.[2][3] His work has received numerous awards, including the World Fantasy Award, the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, the Franz Kafka Prize, and the Jerusalem Prize.[4][5][6] Biography[edit] Murakami was born in Kyoto, Japan, during the post-World War II baby boom and raised in Shukugawa (Nishinomiya), Ashiya and Kobe.[11][12] He is an only child. He has worked regularly with the anime studio and production enterprise, Production I.G, such as his work on Jin-Roh, Patlabor, Blood: The Last Vampire, and for whom he has directed the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex anime television series, which was followed on into a second season, Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG and a TV movie, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society. Early life[edit] Gilligan was born in Richmond, Virginia, the son of Gail, a grade school teacher, and George Vincent Gilligan, Sr., an insurance claims adjuster.[6] His parents divorced in 1974 and he and his younger brother, Patrick, were raised in Farmville and Chesterfield County.[1][7] Growing up, Gilligan became best friends with future film editor and film title designer Angus Wall.
