France.fr dresse son premier bilan et fixe des ambitions. En parfait état de fonctionnement depuis le lundi 16 août, France.fr nous a envoyé le bilan de sa première véritable semaine, après son raté en juillet dernier. « France.fr a drainé, du lundi 16 août au lundi 23 août, plus de 329 799 visites, soit 318 008 visiteurs uniques et 1 128 566 vues » nous informe-t-on.
Près de quatre visiteurs sur cinq sont Français, le deuxième pays attiré par France.fr étant le Royaume-Uni. À ce jour, le site est encore très francophone du côté de ses visiteurs, puisque seulement 6,6 % d’entre eux se sont rendus sur la version anglophone du site, contre plus de 90 % pour la version française. « Les internautes passent près de 5mns sur le site, avec une moyenne de 3,4 pages vues » nous précise-t-on. Le site, qui devrait subir des modifications importantes cet automne, nous rappelle qu’il est une machine assez importante, comptant plus de 3 000 pages dès son lancement, le tout traduit en quatre langues (anglais, allemand, espagnol et italien).

I’ve been fascinated by the France.fr saga since it’s “launch” day and its nearly immediate crash. It’s supposed to be a grande multi-language portal for French culture and tourism, generously paid for by French taxpayers. The site was down for over a month (even French entrepreneurs were laughing) and finally went live on August 16. Anyway, it turns out the whole project went just a tad over budget and will end up costing around €4 million euros. Which is pretty awesome because I can’t figure out how in the world someone could bill that amount while keeping a straight face.
If any other countries out there want their own “grande cause nationale,” we’d like to bid on the project. And with that I officially end our coverage of France.fr until at least next year. But yesterday France launched France.fr with a middling amount of press attention.
But the site went down almost immediately after launching. This morning we gave it a pass, but tonight it’s still down. And we’re not sure anyone is working very hard to get it back up – it is just an information website, after all. From The Connexion on the launch: And France’s senior government official overseeing the Internet, Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, even took the time to tweet “Lancement aujourd’hui du portail officiel de la France dans le monde” (“Today’s launch of official website of France in the world”). A French friend says of the site (when it was live) “It just does not work, full of bugs, and the english translation is hilariously bad.” For now France.fr has a landing page saying the site is unavailable in a variety of languages. Vive la France!
