Some Unusual & Interesting Facts About Mushrooms

Mushrooms are fungi. Fungi are as uniquely different from plants as plants are from animals. In fact, fungi and animals are now in the same super-kingdom, Opisthokonta. 2. Fungi recycle plants after they die and transform them into rich soil. 3. 4. 5. Magic Mushroom Milkshake Island. Out in a dirty surfer bar in Bali earlier this year, a guy called Big D—an ex-convict with a huge, South Carolina-themed tattoo—told my friends and I about Gili Trawangan, a tiny, idyllic island where magic mushroom milkshakes are sold on the side of the road like it's no big deal.

Aware of the fact that ex-cons in dirty Balinese bars usually have the best party hook-ups, it seemed wise to take a day trip to Trawangan. The island is an early morning, two hour boat ride from mainland Bali. We could have taken the 20 minute flight to Lombok, the neighboring island, and gotten a water taxi from there, but a similar plane flying the same journey had crashed a week earlier and we're all mega pussies. Our boat was called the Rizky Bone, which, coincidentally, is what I was going to call the nu-metal band I started with a rockabilly kid when I was 12. After about 30 seconds of being there, you start to realize that mushrooms are pretty much inescapable.

The Beauty of Ice Storms - GreenPacks

I was listening to the warnings on the radio as I drove a delivery truck for a flower store. I happened to look in the rear view mirror and saw a giant twister. Thankfully, it was about 10 miles away. But, I couldn’t help but get out of my truck and just stand there enthralled, watching it come my way. Storms have a beauty about them. Glow-in-the-dark mushroom rediscovered after 170 years. It's something you would never expect to go missing, but one of the world's brightest glow-in-the-dark mushrooms has been rediscovered after an absence of more than 170 years, according to USA Today. The bioluminescent shrooms had become a Brazilian legend of sorts. They were first spied in 1840 by an English botanist named George Gardner, who was alarmed after he saw some boys playing with a glowing object in the streets of Vila de Natividad, a village in the Goiás state in central Brazil.

After that, no more sightings of the brightly glowing fungus had ever been reported. The mushroom was nearly forgotten until 2002, when Brazilian chemist Cassius Stevani came across Gardner's early reports. Then, in 2005, a breakthrough occurred. Izar and Fragaszy scooped up specimens and contacted Stevani, who later confirmed that the mushrooms were indeed Gardner's long lost species. One thing researchers are certain of, however, is that these mushrooms are poisonous. Murmuration on Vimeo. - StumbleUpon. The Mountain on Vimeo.
