Sputnik Sweetheart (スプートニクの恋人, Supūtoniku no koibito) is a novel by Haruki Murakami , published in Japan , by Kodansha, in 1999. An English translation by Philip Gabriel was published in 2001. The plot features three main characters: Sumire, Miu, and 'K'. The novel's protagonist, Sumire, is an aspiring writer who survives on a family stipend and the creative input of her only friend, the novel's male narrator, 'K'. 'K' is an elementary school teacher, 25 years old, and in love with Sumire, though she does not quite share his feelings. At a wedding, Sumire meets an Ethnic Korean woman, Miu.

The Alchemist is a novel by Paulo Coelho first published in 1988. Originally written in Portuguese , it has been translated into 71 languages as of 2011. An allegorical novel, The Alchemist follows a young Andalusia n shepherd named Santiago in his journey to Egypt, after having a recurring dream of finding treasure there. The book has gone on to becoming an international bestseller. According to AFP , it has sold more than 65 million copies in more than 160 countries, becoming one of the best-selling books in history . But according to the publisher HarperCollins , at the time of that paperback publication, all of Coelho's many books had sold 65 million copies total; according to the author's web site, twenty-one million copies of The Alchemist have been sold.

Jack Kerouac
Jean-Louis "Jack" Kerouac was an American novelist and poet. He is considered a literary iconoclast and, alongside William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg , a pioneer of the Beat Generation . Kerouac is recognized for his spontaneous method of writing, covering topics such as Catholic spirituality , jazz , promiscuity , Buddhism , drugs, poverty, and travel. His writings have inspired other writers, including Ken Kesey , Bob Dylan , Richard Brautigan , Curtis Meanor , Thomas Pynchon , Lester Bangs , Tom Robbins , Will Clarke , Ben Gibbard , Haruki Murakami , Jacquelyn Landgraf . Kerouac became an underground celebrity and, with other beats, a progenitor of the hippie movement , although he remained antagonistic toward some of its politically radical elements.
