NASA shows 3D printing in zero gravity (video) Aug.13, 2013 NASA says it plans to launch the first 3D printer into space in June 2014. But how do they 3D print objects in a zero gravity environment? NASA released a video today that shows off how its Zero Gravity 3D printer will "enable Star Trek replication right there on the spot. " Along with manufacturer Made in Space, the space agency has been developing a zero-gravity printing model for the International Space Station. The 3D Print Experiment performed well during microgravity flight tests this summer, and Made in Space announced on Aug.7 that the company's 3D printer has also passed a battery of tests at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., confirming that the machine can survive the rigors of launch and function in a microgravity environment.

The printer will be used to manufacture small spare parts and tools. The goal of 3D printing is to take this capability to microgravity for use on the International Space Station. It is good to have VARS who will support the community and remember that the purpose here IS for the users to interact with users. We had 33 total in attendance with some of course who were supposed to be there but could not. Siemens as always is a great source of talent which they loan to us for these meetings and since we have them at the Siemens Huntsville headquarters you never know who might show up. This begins the series of meetings and as soon as I go over survey forms and determine frequency and future agendas I will be posting the information. I think for those of you who could have attended and did not would find that those who did felt it was well worthwhile and intend to be back.

I hope those of you who read this and can will consider being at the next one. Like this: MindGear Labs | Imagine. Create. Ignite. HUNTSVILLE, AL -- An eight-year lawsuit between the former Intergraph Corp. and Pennsylvania-based software maker Bentley Systems has been settled for nearly $200 million, according to court documents.

The settlement is among the largest in Madison County history, court watchers said. As part of a settlement agreed upon last month, Cobalt BSI Holding, which bought Intergraph in 2006, will sell back to Bentley its 15.6 million shares of Bentley stock, at a purchase price of just over $12 per share, totaling about $198 million, according to court documents. In July 2010, Sweden-based Hexagon AB bought Intergraph from Cobalt for $2.1 billion.

The settlement total includes $9.9 million in fees and expenses awarded to Cobalt's attorneys, including Bartley Loftin III of Huntsville and his firm, Maynard Cooper & Gale. Intergraph sold its civil engineering products to Bentley in 2000 and the deal included proceeds from maintenance contracts. Innovation starts here. Meet TED. If you take innovation seriously, you likely know all about the TED Conference that happens in Long Beach every spring. One of the offshoots of TED is TEDx which brings this same type of event to local communities. In my case, I got to attend TEDx in Huntsville Alabama. Siemens puts a lot of value on innovation so while I didn’t go for work, it certainly put me in the right frame of mind to be innovative when I got back. I went with a group of Auburn Alabama Industrial Design students who drove up for the weekend (BTW, Did you see this post on Siemens PLM and Auburn?)

When I got there, I ran into people from many of the top companies in the area. Prior to getting started, several booths were set up with interactive displays. Next to the Maker’s Local 256, Tim Pickens from Dynetics had a rocket display. I also captured some pictures from Dan Satterfield’s presentation – For those of you not living in Huntsville, Dan is the chief meterorogist for WHNT. 8 to be great. New CEO says Hexagon acquisition of Huntsville-based Intergraph 'all about the people' Bob Gathany/Huntsville TimesNew Intergraph CEO Ola Rollen says company will keep because "it would be foolish to change it. " HUNTSVILLE, AL -- When Hexagon first started looking at Intergraph about six years ago, there was one thing that caught the eye of CEO Ola Rollen ... well, maybe there were 5,000 that caught his eye. 5,000 employees, that is. "It's all about the people," Rollen said. "Intergraph is a great company with great people.

" The Stockholm-based company acquired Intergraph in July, and the $2.125 billion deal closed last month. Hexagon has 11,000 employees in 42 countries; of Intergraph's 5,000 employees, about 1,200 are in Huntsville. A veteran of more than 70 acquisitions, Rollen said this one was "fantastic. " Hexagon is a measurement-technology and systems company, and its combination with Intergraph's highly regarded engineering software is expected to help customers make better and faster decisions. "We've gotten positive (feedback) from industry analysts," he said. Times Watchdog Report: Grissom High dethroned in National Merit semifinalists. For the first time, Bob Jones High in Madison and Randolph School in Huntsville have passed Grissom High on one of the more telling indicators of academic competition within the most advanced courses.

Bob Jones High this year had 15 National Merit semifinalists, three times as many as Grissom's five. Those seniors last year took the PSAT, a measure of college readiness, and scored in the top 1 percent in the nation. Randolph, a private school with 13 semifinalists, also pulled ahead of Grissom for the first time. And Huntsville High, long a distant second within the city system, has tied Grissom. The report came out early Wednesday. There's no way to know for certain yet. "If it turns out not to be a fluke, this is a red flag for everybody because Grissom has been the flagship school for the system," said Jennie Robinson, who represents south Huntsville on the city school board. What is clear is that demographics have shifted in Madison.
