http://unix4lyfe.org/time/ GMT: UTC used to be called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) because the Prime Meridian was (arbitrarily) chosen to pass through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Other timezones can be written as an offset from UTC. Australian Eastern Standard Time is UTC+1000. e.g. 10:00 UTC is 20:00 EST on the same day. Daylight saving does not affect UTC.

One of the most used shell commands is “cd”. A quick survey among my friends revealed that between 10 and 20% of all commands they type are actually cd commands! Unfortunately, jumping from one part of your system to another with cd requires you to enter almost the full path, which isn’t very practical and requires a lot of keystrokes. autojump is a faster way to navigate your filesystem. It works by maintaining a database of the directories you use the most from the command line.

Just a list of 20 (now 28) tools for the command line. Some are little-known, some are just too useful to miss, some are pure obscure -- I hope you find something useful that you weren't aware of yet! Use your operating system's package manager to install most of them. (Thanks for the tips, everybody!) Discussion of this post on Hacker News - that's the place to get into nice old-school FidoNet-style flame wars about the important things in life, like whether or not tmux is better than screen , is parallel better than xargs , whether or not ifconfig is a power tool, or should this list include somebody's once-used tool for converting old Pascal code to C or something. :o) http://kkovacs.eu/cool-but-obscure-unix-tools
