Behind the Banksy Stunt. Street Art Project, by Google Cultural Institute. Art brings Aleppo's message to the world. It is estimated that 70 per cent of Aleppo’s residents have fled. While many can’t leave because it is too expensive or they don’t have a passport, others have made the conscious decision to stay amid the rubble and barrel bombs. Many refuse to leave their home; others are volunteers or aid workers. And then you have those who have remained for art, believing that it could play an important role in documenting the crisis and healing the soul. “I just want to transfer the right message in the world,” painter Abu Nadim said standing next to one of his artworks on the street in Aleppo. The artwork he was pointing to shows a boy and girl holding hands, with bricks next to them to rebuild the country, regardless of religion. “Nobody wanted this,” he added, pointing to a demolished building. Nadim became famous in the opposition-held area of Aleppo for working tirelessly on posters for protests against the government since the revolution began more than three years ago.

Google immortalises the world's street art. Google said the decision was motivated by a desire to immortalise the ephemereal nature of street art. "The transient nature of street art means it can be at risk of being scrubbed out and lost forever to its legions of fans," writes the Google Cultural Institute's programme manager, Lucy Schwartz, on the official Google blog.

"But long after the paint has faded from the walls, technology can help preserve street art, so people can discover it wherever and whenever they like... Street art may be temporary on our walls and sidewalks, but its beauty and vibrancy live on, on the web. " The 5,000 street art works are organised by location, artist, medium and style.

Thirty partnering cultural organisations in 15 different countries have supplied the images through their curators. The collection also includes work that no longer exists or has since been whitewashed away. Blek Le Rat : The Wall : 3 minute wonder. Blek le Rat Interview on Street Art -Warholian- White Walls.
