The Eleventh Annual Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption Consortium Meeting was convened to discuss recent advances and future directions in imaging and nanomedicine. Neuroimaging techniques have become increasingly important in assessing the biologic and physiologic properties of brain tumors and neurologic lesions. PET Imaging of Gliomas Discussion at the meeting centered on new PET radiotracers under development.

Imaging Delivery to the Brain Intracarotid or intravertebral infusion of hyperosmotic mannitol leads consistently to a reversible opening of the BBB. Fig 1. Imaging intratumor injection. Fig 2. ¿qué ventajas y desventajas tiene para la humanidad? ¿Una informática -una nueva computación- con ordenadores que no gastan casi energía y trabajan millones de veces más rápidos? Nanoparticles from WN. Fluorescent nano-barcodes could revolutionise diagnostics - Nano. NDC: Nanomedicine Center for Nucleoprotein Machines. Executive Summary Nucleoprotein machines manage the business of information storage and transfer inside cells, including DNA replication and repair, RNA synthesis, and protein translation. Our center's science and engineering focus is to develop tools and concepts to better understand nucleoprotein machines. Our central prototype is the non-homologus end joining (NHEJ) complex for repairing DNA double stranded breaks. We are combining bright photostable probes, super-resolution microscopy, and other physical and computational tools to investigate assembly, disassembly, and control of the NHEJ complex.

We also hope to engineer new protein machines that can provide genetic fixes for common human diseases. Introduction The mammalian cell nucleus is filled with self-organizing, interconnected, nanometer-scale machines that carry out DNA replication, RNA synthesis, RNA transport and DNA repair, and other processes [1]. Researchers Develop Nano-Sized ‘Cargo Ships’ to Target and Destroy Tumors September 11, 2008 By Kim McDonald Scientists have developed nanometer-sized ‘cargo ships’ that can sail throughout the body via the bloodstream without immediate detection from the body’s immune radar system and ferry their cargo of anti-cancer drugs and markers into tumors that might otherwise go untreated or undetected.

In a forthcoming issue of the Germany-based chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie, scientists at UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and MIT report that their nano-cargo-ship system integrates therapeutic and diagnostic functions into a single device that avoids rapid removal by the body’s natural immune system. Their paper is now accessible in an early online version here. These microscopic cargo ships could one day provide the means to more effectively deliver toxic anti-cancer drugs to tumors in high concentrations without negatively impacting other parts of the body. .: Optics & Photonics Focus :: Neurosurgery goes Nano inside a C.

Volume 3 Story 5 - 17/11/2008 One of the standing goals of neuroscience is to understand neurons at a cellular level, in vivo. A recent development takes this goal one step further by enabling axon cuts and the study of nerve regeneration on individual neurons in live organisms. Nerve Regeneration on a chip. An artist’s impression of a C. elegans worm immobilized in the microfluidic chamber, subjected to the process of nano-neurosurgery. Courtesy of Ben-Yakar’s group. Miniaturization has been the buzzword that brought about a revolution in science, in technology, and as a consequence in the way we live. By shrinking into tiny little chips whole rooms full of electrical devices miniaturization has, for example, resized powerful computers into palmtops. What comes to your mind when thinking of a surgery room? In this surgery room the patient is not a human being or anything even remotely close to its dimensions. C. elegans offers a simple biological platform to conduct these studies.
